About this listen

Mere Christianity is C.S. Lewis' forceful and accessible doctrine of Christian belief. First heard as informal radio broadcasts and then published as three separate books, The Case for Christianity, Christian Behavior, and Beyond Personality, Mere Christianity brings together what Lewis sees as the fundamental truths of the religion. Rejecting the boundaries that divide Christianity's many denominations, C.S. Lewis finds a common ground on which all those who have Christian faith can stand together, proving that "at the center of each there is something, or a Someone, who against all divergences of belief, all differences of temperament, all memories of mutual persecution, speaks with the same voice".Click here to see all the titles in our C.S. Critic reviews

"Geoffrey Howard's performance is superb; he is clear and unhurried, giving just the right emphasis and/or inflection....Whether or not one agrees with Lewis's arguments, it is a pleasure to hear such a skillful reading of an eloquent work." ( Library Journal)

simply deep

this a great book and the narrators voice is well matched to the text. I read this book when I was 17 and it formed a solid foundation for my faith. The simplicity of Lewis' style hides the depth of the thought he outlines. I can't recommend this more highly as a book, and as an audiobook it works. If you have faith or are seeking to understand what faith in Jesus is all about then this is the book for you.It is also a great learning resource for those who would like to explain their faith in a clearer way.

An Essential Reading for Every Christian

Highly recommended. This work tackles many fundamental questions involved in Christianity. Moreover, it is purposefully written in a denomination free manner. Lewis managed to convey deep thoughts using plain English.

I agree with all the points that C.S. Lewis is trying to establish. Even though, some supporting arguments / illustrations / analogues are not 100% watertight (when examined at epistemology level). However, it is a minor if not trivial price to pay in exchange of assessability.

Accessible in layman's terms but challenging and enlightening. Great read for Christians, atheists and all those on the fence.

Why it is logical to be a Christian

As a discontented agnostic I was looking for a work that might help me to accept the Christian religion or (conversely and less satisfactorily) reject it, once and for all, and get on with the rest of my life without bothering further with it. I decided to give this book the chance to fulfill this extremely tall order. Has it done so? At the moment I am still unsure but what I can say is that it has raised some very important questions which I had not previously considered. Being of only average intelligence I do not pretend to understand all the points he makes but most of it will be readily accessable and understandable to most people. Lewis's central hypothesis seems to be that there is a rule of human nature ,which we all instictivley acknowlege, that we should be 'good'. He goes on to establish (or at least he believes he has established) that this rule is not man made and therefore logically must come from a god. Thereafter he goes into more detail about the Christian God he believes in and the basic principals of the Christian faith.

I have listened to it once and found it interesting and informative. I am currently listening to it for a second time, and hope that I will understand more this time around. I am sure it will help with my quest and if you have a similar one that it will help you.

One final word of warning. This book is a book of it's time - the 1940's. Some of Lewis's statements about e.g. women, homosexuals and war - are strickingly non PC. Although dis-inclined to accept his views on these subjects I do not think that this negates his entire thesis, but if you would be inclined to do so it may not be the book for you.
