About this listen
Brighton, 1920.
Clara Fitzgerald is trying to earn a little respect as the first female private detective in Brighton when Mrs Wilton turns up on her doorstep one snowy day. Struggling to get by since the war, Mrs Wilton has been convinced by an unscrupulous clairvoyant that her dead husband is trying to make contact via strange riddles that supposedly lead to hidden treasure. Clara is quickly on the case to prove the notorious clairvoyant, Mrs Greengage, is nothing more than a scam artist extorting money from Mrs Wilton.
But after an unpleasant seance, Mrs Greengage is found with a bullet in her chest, and Clara is rapidly a suspect as one of the last people to see her alive. There is no option but to unravel the mystery for herself, taking on the biggest case of her life, much to the consternation of the local police inspector.
Soon Clara is discovering Mrs Greengage's dark past, her involvement in a previous murder case and her husband's strange talents. Why won't Mr Greengage leave his house? Why was Mrs Greengage's sherry laced with strychnine when she was shot to death? And just who is the man stalking Clara?
Helped by her brother Tommy, a cripple since the Great War, and portrait photographer Oliver Bankes, who takes crime scene pictures for the police in his spare time, Clara sets out to prove who the real killer is. But little does she realise how emotional challenging discovering the truth will be.

Mostly Harmless
Not great book by Any means. published 2015. so quite old (I write this November 2023). it was free from the plus catalogue. I like historical mysteries. which is why I chose it. But was going to give up after the first chapter as the narrator was stillted to say the least. But I kept on and either she improved or my standards lowered because come half way through I was enjoying it. I did not guess the end. But when it was revealed it was obvious. So, worth it as a freebie. But not a credit. Make your own mind up! T

Easy listening
The two main flaws are firstly the evidence which convicts the killer. Its very weak however it feels like the author had ended up with no way to identify the killer so weak evidence would do. Second flaw is the amount of time the heroine gets upset due to how she believes she has been treated because she is a woman when all the men are falling over themselves to help her I assume because she is so attractive.

Satisfying listen
This book was recommended to me by a friend and I’m happy to pass the recommendation forwards. Easy listening, good narration, and a satisfying conclusion to a tale well told. I’m going to look for more by this author. 😊

A fun little mystery
An entertaining little mystery, well narrated and easy to follow. One minor quibble: early on, a character who died in the trenches is said to have enjoyed cryptic crosswords. The first cryptic crossword puzzle was published by the Daily Telegraph in 1925.

I enjoyed it.
I enjoyed it. It was any easy listen, very well performed and an introduction to what may be a pleasant series.

Utter nonsense
Silly story, badly researched, and a terrible reader on top. A complete waste of time and money.
