About this listen

Melissa Joan Hart explained it all—from dating to bullies—in her groundbreaking role as Clarissa Darling on Clarissa Explains It All. She cast a spell on millions more television viewers as Sabrina, the Teenage Witch. Now, in Melissa Explains It All, Melissa tells the frank and funny behind-the-scenes stories from her extraordinary past and her refreshingly normal present.

Melissa has been entertaining audiences most of her life; when there were no girls named Melissa on her favorite show, the forceful four year old decided she'd get on TV her way. From that moment on, Melissa has shown a singular determination and focus—whether it's for booking three national commercials so her dad would build her a tree house or for nailing the audition for Clarissa.

From her first commercial to her current starring role in ABC Family's hit Melissa and Joey, Hart never let fame go to her head. She always had one foot in Hollywood and one foot in reality—and still does. Melissa makes us laugh along with her as she talks about:

--guest appearances in shows like Saturday Night Live and The Equalizer
--auditioning for Punky Brewster and Clarissa
--her early Broadway days
--wacky parties she's thrown and attended
-- the actors who influenced her and whom she befriended, worked with and competed against
--her experiences both on and off-set—with Sabrina's Salem the Cat and Elvis the Alligator on Clarissa
--how she met the love of her life at the Kentucky Derby

Melissa Joan Hart explains all that she's learned along the way—what's kept her grounded, normal and working when others have not been so fortunate—and that she's the approachable, hilarious girl-next-door her fans have always thought she'd be.

Takes me back to my childhood!

What did you like most about Melissa Explains It All?

I loved this book as it took me back to being a teenager! I feel that I have grown up with Melissa through her programmes and it was great to learn about how she got into this business. But most of all I love the fact in how she remains down to earth and her most important role is being a Mother.

Who was your favorite character and why?

My favourite character was obviously Melissa herself!

Have you listened to any of Melissa Joan Hart’s other performances? How does this one compare?

This is the first book on audible but what I enjoyed the most was the author was also the narrator.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I really enjoyed listening in how to Melissa acting was something that was a natural hobby and how she explains she got into it very young but was in no way forced into it.

Likeable romp with limited depth

If you could sum up Melissa Explains It All in three words, what would they be?

Fun, superficial

What does Melissa Joan Hart bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Her distinctive tones and tongue in cheek

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Not really

Any additional comments?

This book is nice enough. There is no depth or darkness to it at all. It is very much like the rest of the MJH brand. It made me laugh a couple of times and for the most part fore filled it's part of the deal. I guess i should be pleased that she has remained relatively normal dispite her fame at a young age.

I think the thing I didn't warm too was the name dropping - but the reality is that is a big part of her life. She grew up wanting to be, working hard to become famous. From a young age she fought for it but it does mean her life is full of other famous people.

Interesting

A nice easy listen that keeps you glued. I only didn’t give 5 stars because I suppose she actually is quite normal so there isn’t much Hollywood scandal if that’s what you’re looking for, although she did take loads of drugs and talks about that lots.

I love MJH but..

Oh dear god this was cringe, nail biting ahhhh as if you’ve said that and pretty pathetic. For example if you are reading this and have listen to Melissa talking about being a good wife, you do not have to have the same hobbies as your husband and do things like watch footy together, my gosh. Get a hobby Melissa! Also the name dropping ahhhhhh!
Literally loved listening to it and I still love her but eeeeekkkkk what a memoir.
I’m still cringing thinking about it.

Selfish - I regret reading it

I looked forward to reading, well listening to this book as I grew up with her on TV but was quite disappointed with hearing it all. the general message was if you don't have it, you should go for it and if you don't have it still then go out and buy it. It felt very selfish and like a know it all.

I would not recommend, listening to the end didn't make it any better. I wish I'd not bothered and kept the image of her from childhood memories.

This book needn't have been written

What did you like best about Melissa Explains It All? What did you like least?

I can't really say what I liked the best, nothing really stood out, which is quite representative of the book. What I liked the least is that she brought up things that you might tell your friends about, but certainly not write about in a book. I understand she is proud of her party planning, but why would she write page after page about it, describing all the decorations etc??

What could Melissa Joan Hart have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Take out all the superficial fluff, or mention it in just a sentence. Go more in depth, with more feeling. She wasn't very good at describing things in a way that made me care, or understand why they were important. And I don't think it's because of the events themselves, but about the way she described them.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

Yes. But she wasn't very good, sometimes sounding monotone, sometimes using a cadence that just sounds off and didn't make any sense. It was okay, but I would expect more from an actress, or any professional audiobook narrator.

Was Melissa Explains It All worth the listening time?

No, sorry, can't say that it was. And I probably liked Melissa Joan Hart better before I read this book. She comes off a little full of herself, and shallow.
