About this listen
Doctors, nurses, medics, and stretcher-bearers must venture wherever someone is injured and the cry for assistance goes up. Their job is to put themselves in the heart of danger – to risk their own lives as they try to save the dying.
War at its rawest is their domain, an ugly place of shattered bodies, severed limbs and death. They fulfil society’s vital pledge to its warriors that they will not be abandoned on the battlefield. Yet, more often than not, what they do goes unnoticed – except by those who survive because of their extraordinary courage and skill. This is the story of those brave men and women who go to war armed with bandages not bombs, and put saving life above taking life.

Compelling and accurate
Compelling narrative concerning history and development of medical care from point of injury to rehabilitation and recovery. A must for anyone considering a career as military medic or just interested in pre hospital care in extraordinary circumstances.

One of the best books ever.
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
The title of this book may be a bit dull, but the stories of these brave Men and Women in what may be the worst time in their lives is nothing short of amazing. From the Second World War right up to current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan this book tell of the trials and tribulations of being a medic be they Doctor or enlisted soldier they all play their part. Well worth listening to.
Have you listened to any of Michael Tudor Barnes’s other performances? How does this one compare?
No I haven't
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Parts of the story, because it is about real life are very moving but other parts show the Irrepressible spirit of the service men and women

Solid interesting read/listen
Well written accurate and interesting book, not all blood and gore, appropriate for medical types and non medical types alike.
Couple of dodgy accents though.

Brilliant
A Powerful and very moving account of how medical treatment for the wounded combat solder has evolved over recent times. Packed full of personal accounts. The narrator brings out the very best of an already excellent book. This book will pull on your emotions, but will leave you with a sense of overwhelming pride for the medics and those injured service personel who serve in our military.

Brilliant book and couldn’t have chosen a better reader!
This book was absolutely fascinating, I couldn’t stop listening. Anyone would find this book interesting I would say, it’s emotionally raw and written from the first hand experiences of medics on the battlefield journaling for their own sanity. An ideal book for anyone with an interest in first aid, medicine and experience of war, but everyone should hear the experiences in this book to truly appreciate and try to understand even slightly what those who fought for this country went through to get to where we are now.

Some good stories
Some good stories but rather long and repetitive. I got bored and didn't finish the book.
