Summary
London 1925: Ex-boxer Harry Stubbs goes undercover, working in a mental institution to investigate an epidemic of madness. Bizarre deaths occur at the asylum, seemingly linked to an occult power. As he starts to unravel the mystery, Harry’s grip on his own sanity becomes increasingly precarious.

just great
I am a big fan of the Cthulhu mythos and I’m always delighted to find a new iteration on much loved themes. Hambling’s books have all been well crafted, with good pacing, strong story lines and an enormously likeable enormous protagonist, who, despite his protestations of being an ill educated, simple working man, actually has a mind like a steel trap. The allusions to the Cthulhu mythos are nicely handled and character development much better than that seen in the works of HPL. Wynters does an excellent job of bringing a London rough diamond to life without descending into parody. Strongly recommended.

Great Harry Stubbs
Great Harry Stubbs story and some enjoyable that I did not even notice the almost nine hours length as it went by so quickly.
This is deep and dark as Harry Stubb's own mind is in question. The only reason I have not given five stars is that the ending was on the border of mystery erring on vagueness in terms of its final conclusions. But a great adventure and, as always with Harry Stubbs adventures, full of fascinating historical facts for those who wish to dig deeper.
Broken Meats is still my favourite, but this one is a "novel length" feature. If I had read this as a book, I would probably rate it better than Elder Ice, but as an audiobook I feel Elder Ice wins out on narration style and pacing. Stubbs fans will love it though

Not as good as the previous ones
Firstly, this is the 3rd narrator in this 4 book series. The 2nd and 3rd were the same narrator. I didn’t realise this book had a different narrator until I started listening to it. There was not anything “wrong “with this current narrator. He made a good try at copying the previous narrator voice for Harry. I just knew it was different which threw me for a loop.
Secondly, the books storyline book slipped past supernatural/steampunk; I am still trying to figure out how to categorise it.
