About this listen

Two and a half thousand years ago, the Greeks and the Persians fought an epic battle to decide the future of the world...

Arimnestos of Plataea grew up wanting to be a bronzesmith, like his father. Then, in the chaos of war, he was taken to a city in the Persian empire and sold as a slave. To win his freedom he had to show that he could fight and kill. Now, to preserve that freedom, he must kill again.

For the Persians are coming. A vast army sent by King Darius to put down the rebellious Greeks and burn the city of Athens to the ground. Standing against them on the plain of Marathon is a much smaller force of Athenians, alongside their Plataean allies. To defeat such overwhelming force seems impossible. And yet to yield would mean the destruction of everything the Greeks have dreamed of.

In the dust and heat of Marathon, in the clash of shields and the rush of spears, amid the thunder of hooves and the screams of the dying, those dreams will undergo their fiercest test - and Arimnestos and his Greek comrades will discover the true price of freedom.©2019 Christian Cameron (P)2019 Orion Publishing Group

A masterpiece

The story is absolutely superb, there is an unexpected twist or a turn everytime you would expect the reading to get stale. Amazing narration too!

Sleepless Nights

I often find an audible narration at bedtime will send me to sleep. This second book in the series, like the first were exceptions - and indeed they are exceptional stories, well narrated. Five stars for everything, the story line and the telling. The narrator in my opinion managed most of the Greek pronunciation very well - the only mistake that bothered me was his mispronunciation of the two Greek letters 'oi' which should sound like 'ee' not 'oy'. Still if you didn't know, you wouldn't mind.
His battles are exciting bloody and detailed, the main characters you get to know well and there's more than a few lines that made me laugh out loud.
My adult son has flown through the whole series and I'm just about to start the third - no doubt more insomnia on the way.

Amazing

If you're into historical fiction or not pick this series up. The world, the characters and the dialogue are all great. The way the main character tells the story in 1st person as an old man and interjects with comments now and then is beatiful.

THE BEST YET!

I will run out of superlatives before I get to the end of this series, so I'll leave it for now; suffice to say that War gamers and any person interested in military history - yes I mean history - and the human condition, DO NOT pass over this author and this narrator. Mick the Hick

The Ancient Mariner

There's already something comforting and familiar about joining old Arimnestos as he relates the tales of his extraordinary life as a warrior, blacksmith and as a man in turbulent times. Peter Noble voices him extremely well and you can almost hear the crackle of a fire in the background. He's telling his story to his young son and his friends though this really isn't in any way a children's tale. It's as bloody and vicious as you would expect from this genre across this period. There are many excellent battle and combat scenes and Cameron does not give anyone an easy ride. The body count is high giving a real feel for the sheer mortality of the people of the period.

In short, this is high quality historical military fiction and I will definitely be joining Arimnestos in front of his fire again in the not too distant future!

A shame it went this way

The first book was grounded and quite realistic while this one does the opposite and now the main character is an invincible man who can do anything and sleeps with every “Goddess”

Very boring

I tried as hard as i could.
I find the series boring, and the narration poor.
And silly me kept hoping it was building into an epic.
Unfortunately it was not.
Gave up on the third book.
