Summary
From the author of TikTok sensations and global bestsellers The Love Hypothesis and Love on the Brain.
Rival physicists collide in a vortex of academic feuds and fake dating shenanigans in this delightfully STEMinist romcom.
The many lives of theoretical physicist Elsie Hannaway have finally caught up with her. By day, she's an adjunct professor, toiling away at grading labs and teaching thermodynamics in the hopes of landing tenure. By other day, Elsie makes up for her non-existent paycheck by offering her services as a fake girlfriend, tapping into her expertly honed people-pleasing skills to embody whichever version of herself the client needs.
Honestly, it's a pretty sweet gig - until her carefully constructed Elsie-verse comes crashing down. Because Jack Smith, the annoyingly attractive and arrogant older brother of her favourite client, turns out to be the cold-hearted experimental physicist who ruined her mentor's career and undermined the reputation of theorists everywhere. And he's the same Jack Smith who rules over the physics department at MIT, standing right between Elsie and her dream job.
Elsie is prepared for an all-out war of scholarly sabotage but...those long, penetrating looks? Not having to be anything other than her true self when she's with him? Will falling into an experimentalist's orbit finally tempt her to put her most guarded theories on love into practice?
Critic reviews
"Ali Hazelwood proves that science is sexy as hell, and that love can 'STEM' from the most unlikely places. She's my newest must-buy author." (Jodi Picoult)

Accurate T1D representation
As a type 1 diabetic myself I really appreciated the accurate representation of what it’s like living with it and that it wasn’t a big deal or over talked about.

Great book
it's not often in my experience that you get a romance book where the author actually knows in depth detail about the topic that's covered in the book. it adds to the complete believe ability of the story you are engaged in. running along side that, you get the gambit of emotions and complexity of the life and how we are all just trying to find, traverse, stumble, I guess just navigate our way through life in the best way we know how. if we're lucky we'll get some help along the way and these two eventually find that help in each other. a really good book, made even more enjoyable by a really good performance from this talented narrator.

Great story and narration
The first hour I struggled to get into the book, but maybe I was a bit distracted. But once I did, I really did! The story is great. It’s nice to hear things from an academical background as I don’t know that scene at all. But it’s so relatable and the development between Jack and Julia is so lovely. I’d definitely recommend.

Exceeded expectations
I didn't expect much but thought it would kill some time. I'm pleased I listened. More complex than I expected, and a little more raunchy, too. Overall good fun!

😍 loved it 🤩
Funny, quirky, rivals to lovers romance. Both main characters in STEM. Loved it.
It does follow her normal formula, but it's so well done that it doesn't matter. It's also a super slow burn, just slightly better than a Mariana Zapata level of wait, and at least there is some mild tension. However, smexy times is not a reason to read this at all.
Also, the fmc pathological need to please everyone is somewhat annoying, specially towards the end.
Amazingly good narration, and the only way to make it better would be to have a duet.

STEM romances is my new addiction
Ali quickly became a favourite to read on a gloomy day! It was funny, quirky, smart, romantic and angsty just how I like it. Another great job, Ali!

Best one so far
I really really enjoyed this book. I’ve read the rest of Ali’s back catalog and liked them to but this one was just better. The pace of the book was on point, the balance of story and science perfection and female leads journey of self awareness was surprisingly interesting. Again the book is funny and heart warming. I think this is going on my reread list.

Beautiful storyline and perfect performance
I have a soft spot for Ali Hazelwood but I think I love this one the most! Rivals to lovers, so much person building that show beautiful individuals, and heart warming happy ending! The voice of Therese as well is just absolute perfection, thoroughly enjoyed her voices for the characters and added to their wonderful personalities. Highly recommend.
