About this listen

The latest New York Times best seller by the beloved author of Saving CeeCee Honeycutt.

Beth Hoffman’s best-selling debut, Saving CeeCee Honeycutt, won admirers and acclaim with its heartwarming story and cast of unforgettably quirky characters. Now her flair for evocative settings and richly drawn Southern personalities shines again in her compelling second novel, Looking for Me.

Teddi Overman found her life’s passion in turning other people’s castoffs into beautifully restored antiques. Leaving her hardscrabble Kentucky childhood behind, Teddi opens her own store in Charleston. She builds a life as unexpected and quirky as her many customers, but nothing alleviates the haunting uncertainty she’s felt since her brother Josh mysteriously disappeared. When signs emerge that Josh might still be alive, Teddi returns to Kentucky, embarking on a journey that could help her come to terms with her shattered family - and find herself.

Critic reviews

Winner of the Ohioana Book Award for fiction, 2014

"Hoffman's novel of a woman putting the pieces of her family's secrets together combines a deep dramatic impact with Southern charm." (Publishers Weekly)

"Hoffman has a good ear for dialogue, and Teddie and her friends are realistic, appealing characters. Perfect for fans of family-centered women’s fiction, this book will have special appeal to readers interested in antiques and 'shabby chic' style." (Booklist)

Beautiful book

Any additional comments?

This is such a beautiful book to listen to. The narrator is excellent. From the first word to the last she has you captivated in the story. I loved all of the characters. It's heartwarming, touching and at times heartbreaking. The book is beautifully written. Although, I think I enjoyed listening to it more than I would have if I had read it. It is one of those rare occasions when the author and the narrator come together in perfect harmony. Jenna Lamia tells the story rather than some narrators that just read the book - there's a big difference ! I am very sad to have finished it.

Not too impressed

What did you like best about Looking for Me? What did you like least?

I liked the description of the furniture that she was restoring. I enjoyed the beginning of the book as it reminded me of the home life of Skeeta in the book The Help, and also the relationship she had with her mother. That's where the similarity ends! The storyline was very slow and not a lot happened. I only persevered with it because of the excellent narrator. I was really disappointed with the ending. I was waiting for an exciting and emotional outcome to the story, but it just didn't deliver,

Would you be willing to try another book from Beth Hoffman? Why or why not?

Not sure. I would study the synopsis first, but then again......probably not.

Have you listened to any of Jenna Lamia’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I have listened to The Help. She was one of the 3 narrators. (BEST BOOK EVER!!) She was the main reason I got this book. She is an absolute gem of a narrator. She can do so many different voices, both male and female, old and young. She really brings a book to life. I could not have finished this book if I'd have been reading it, or if another narrator had been doing the reading. I would have given up half way through. She is a very entertaining reader.

Was Looking for Me worth the listening time?

I really don't think so. If someone asked me what the book was about, I would struggle to give an answer!

A wonderful saga

I enjoyed this story immensely. I hadn't read any previous books by this author and didn't know what to expect but what I found was a wonderful long story full of likeable, real characters. I looked forward to hearing the next chapter and lingered over chores so I could hear just a little bit more!
I love Jenna Lamias narration...I could listen to her voice for hours, it is the perfect voice for the story.
Well worth a listen.

The narrator makes it

Would you consider the audio edition of Looking for Me to be better than the print version?

Definitely. The story is good - not excellent, but it's interesting enough to keep you listening, but Jenna Lamia is just fantastic. She brings this book to life and I enjoyed her telling of it more than I would have if I'd imagined the voices myself.

Who was your favorite character and why?

There wasn't a 'baddy' in this book, so all the characters were nice. That makes it sound dull, but nobody stood out as being wonderful or terrible - everyone just sort of got along.

Which character – as performed by Jenna Lamia – was your favourite?

Jenna Lamia made it easy to tell which character was speaking, and she gave them more personality than they had written into them. I think Teddy might have been my favourite.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

No, which is a shame. There were points that were about sad things, but they weren't 'wipe tears while driving, shout "no!" at the radio' kind of moments.

Any additional comments?

I liked the setting of this story, in the 1970s-1990s. If it had been set in the present day, it wouldn't have worked so well.

Any additional comments?

having listened to and enjoyed saving cee cee Honeycutt I thought looking for me would be really good and enjoyable. I nearly gave up at the beginning but realising beth Hoffman was the author carried on. in the end I did finish it but can't say I enjoyed it. there were a lot of sad bits with very little humour to offset this.
told in the first person it went between childhood and adulthood numerous times breaking the flow of the story.
jenna lamia was o.k performing the story.
