Summary
Eldritch Swan is a dead man. Or at least that is what his nephew Stephen has always been told. Until one day Eldritch walks back into his life after 36 years in an Irish prison. He won't reveal any of the details of his incarceration, insisting only that he is innocent of any crime.
His return should be of interest to no-one. But the visit of a solicitor with a mysterious request will take Eldritch and his sceptical nephew from sleepy seaside Paignton to London, where an exhibition of Picasso paintings from the prestigious Brownlow collection proves to be the starting point on a journey that will transport them back to the Second World War and the mystery behind Eldritch's imprisonment.
In 1940, he was personal assistant to a wealthy diamond dealer in Antwerp, whose collection of modern art was the envy of many. The subsequent disappearance of those paintings began a trail of murder and intrigue which was to have a catastrophic effect on Eldritch's life. But untangling the web of murky secrets, family ties and old betrayals that conceals the truth will prove to be a dangerous pursuit for Eldritch and Stephen. Before long, a mysterious enemy is doing everything possible to stop the truth emerging - at whatever cost....

Good, entertaining listening
To be perfectly honest, I bought this audiobook only because it was on sale, and I was almost giving up half-way through the story. I’m glad I didn’t, as the turn of events unfolding in the second half of the story is surprising and very well crafted. I recommend it. I only give the story 4 stars because the relatively low-speed start really tested me.

A fantastic story with the usual Goddard brilliance
A great story, written with usual Goddard patience that just draws you in. Brilliantly narrated - the Dublin accents were spot on.
If you’re looking for something and your fearful of wasting a credit, this one’s definitely no waste

Great book, great story
It's always interesting to learn something new. The 'troubles,' in Ireland were something I knew almost nothing about. The intricacies of this book, on this subject, educated me on so many things, and the storyline brought it to life for me. Believable characters, and a very good plot. Brilliantly narrated.

Interesting read
Different from my usual genre , but nonetheless enjoyable . Quite an unusual story line . Nonetheless interesting , whilst the narrators. Voice came over quite monotone in the actual narrations. His character voices and accents were believable and accurate . So I forgive him his narrative in parts . All in all a good listen .

loved it!
Convoluted but interesting tale with lots of Robert Goddards clever twists. Unpredictable is about the best way to describe this writer. His stories always confound any attempt to guess the ending. This one was no disappointment.

Time shift story telling at it's finest!
Once settled into the narrative repeatedly shifting between two timelines, one's kept intrigued by this intricately woven tale of stolen Jewish paintings, art forgery & wrongful imprisonment in 1940 and unraveling of the truth in 1976. I certainly didn't see the de Valera assassination plot coming in the final denouncement, despite the question of Irish neutrality in WWII being flagged up. That justice was served by an IRA bomb was an ironic resolution.
Narrator Joe Jameson gave a first rate performance, with a wide variety of accents, ages & genders; it's no wonder he's rated as a voice-over artist.

Goddard on top form
One of RG's better stories brilliantly performed by Joe Jameson. What a range of voices!
His pronunciation of cigarette and Isolde grated on my ear, but overall an enjoyable and entertaining listen.
Robert Goddard at his best.

Good Goddard
Robert Goddard approaching his best. A winding and twisting tale involving actual and fictional characters. Past Caring is my favourite, and this is reasonably close.
