Summary

Step into the ancient fir-tree forests of Scandinavia and bear witness to legends as epic as those of the Greeks and the Romans.

Melvin Burgess revolutionised children's literature with the infamous cult novels Junk and Doing It. In his first adult novel, Loki, he breathes new life into Norse myths.

Starting with the Norse creation myths, the trickster god Loki takes the listener on a wild ride through Norse mythology, from the time the gods—the founders of Asgard—defeated races of monsters, and hurtling through famous stories, including Odin hanging himself on the World Tree, the theft of the corrupting gold ring and the murder of Baldr, the god of love and the Sun. This narrative may seem familiar enough at first, but the listener should beware.

Born within the heart of a fire in the hollow of a tree-trunk, Loki arrives in Asgard as an outsider. He is a trickster, an unreliable narrator, the god of intelligence and politics. In spite of his cleverness and sparkling wit (or, perhaps, because of this...) Loki struggles to find his place among the old patriarchal gods of supernatural power and is constantly at odds with the god of thunder—Thor.

This is a retelling that is contemporary in tone, at once amusing and relatable. It is a heartfelt plea to overthrow the old gods of power and authority and instigate a new era ruled by love and intelligence. Alongside the politics of Asgard, it charts the course of Loki's many loves and families, from his mothering of Odin's famous horse to his intense, turbulent, and, eventually, fatal relationship with Baldr the Beautiful—a tender and moving story of love that goes wrong, jealousy and a transitioning that is forbidden by society.

Sit down and settle in for Loki’s stories

I thoroughly enjoyed this take on Loki and the stories are filled with incredible retellings of some of the best myths in Norse Mythology.
I loved this portrayal of Loki and how different and progressive he is especially when compared to other portrayals of him.

Listening to the sorry was like listening sitting in you grandparents house with a roaring fire and listening to your cherished granddad tell the stories of his youth. Just like your grandad, the middle of the book/stories sort of lose steam and I started to half listen but it’s sandwiched between a fantastic start and end.

If you like North mythology or just want to learn about some of the myths surrounding your favourite trickster seen in some Marvel film adaptations then definitely give this a go.

Loved it!

I don’t have a lot of opinion about loki but I generally like the retelling of mythologies. This is funny but also sad; cute and, somehow, dirty. 😂

Good stories - odd narration

The writing is solid, the take on Loki's story excellent - but the narration, oof. Gerard Logan is obviously a talented voice artist, but he's chosen to portray Loki with a sarky and unpleasant country house accent. Most odd.

The stories are a softer, more diverse Loki than we find elsewhere - little self pity and very open, but the narration really fights that. Much as i love audio books, this might be one to read with your eyes not your ears

don't waste your time.

one of the worst books i've ever encountered based on Norse myths. the performance was also really bad. the narrators should have taken a few pauses in between recording since you can loudly hear him swallowing saliva in the middle of a sentence.

there is hardly any respect towards Norse myths and culture. i thought Marvel was bad but this makes Marvel seem decent in comparison.(but theyre both bad interpretations).

Loki can be an interesting figure to write about but this fails even to pay respect to this cunning little trickster. rather he is turned into a whiny brat.

oddly enough the story turns into some kind of autogynophilic erotica towards the end, and if the author really wanted to write something like that, go ahead, but it has nothing to do with Norse mythology.

Disappointing

At times this book is fun. But unless you’re into some strange fanfic, I don’t want to hear in detail I might add, how Sleipnirr was born. I feel as if there are parts almost written to get a strong reaction. Not a good one, but ew, did he really go there? I know the original stories, and appreciate new adaptation or just stories. But here I feel some things are strange and unnecessary. Such as the creation of men. The narrator is fantastic. However this story is just not for me.
