Nach einem Konzertbesuch, dessen Vorführung Leutnant Gustl eher gelangweilt gefolgt ist, gerät er mit einem ihm bekannten Bäckermeister an der Garderobe in Streit. Gustl will seinen Säbel ziehen, wird aber von dem ihm körperlich überlegenen Bäckermeister daran gehindert und ein "dummer Bub" genannt. Zutiefst in seiner Ehre verletzt, sieht Leutnant Gustl nur einen einzigen Ausweg: seinen Selbstmord!
Arthur Schnitzlers wohl bekannteste Novelle zeichnet gekonnt ein Gesellschaftsportrait des Offizierstandes der k. u. k. Monarchie auf und spiegelt deren Ängste, Obsessionen und Neurosen wieder. Lebendig und einfühlsam interpretiert von Markus Freistätter.
