Summary
Longlisted for the Man Booker Prize 2019
Not far from London, there is a village.
This village belongs to the people who live in it and to those who lived in it hundreds of years ago. It belongs to England's mysterious past and its confounding present.
It belongs to Mad Pete, the grizzled artist. To ancient Peggy, gossiping at her gate. To families dead for generations, and to those who have only recently moved here.
But it also belongs to Dead Papa Toothwort who has woken from his slumber in the woods. Dead Papa Toothwort, who is listening to them all.
Chimerical, audacious, strange and wonderful - a song to difference and imagination, to friendship, youth and love, Lanny is the globally anticipated new novel from Max Porter.

Wonderfully spatial and atmospheric
I enjoyed this audio book enormously. The writing was brilliant and made extraordinary by the performance and production. It clearly had a talented team versed in theatre and radio production. MORE PLEASE!! A totally new and refreshing experience in audible books .

Brilliant audiobook production of a brilliant book!
Utterly spellbinding.
Heart wrenching.
I’m so grateful to the actors and directors of this production who brought this text alive. I bought the paperback as I was so taken by the beauty in their words, but without the skill of the actors I don’t think I would appreciated the story itself as the author intended.
Thankyou!

Interesting format
I struggled with the first half an hour of this and thought I might give up. At first the collection of voices was a bit too much. However, as the story got going I was completely gripped. Refreshing to see complex themes condensed into just a few hours

Better on audible
struggled to get into it with its lack of an 'I' voice and few textual clues as to who was speaking. However well worth persisting with as a tale of great depth unfolds. I listened to it the second time for a delayed book group session and loved it.

Hauntingly beautiful
Poetic, satirical, fantastical and full of the milk of human kindness. For me, a beautifully crafted odyssey, to be revisited, time and again.

Magical story beautifully read
The quirkiness of this reminded me somehow of Dylan Thomas’ Under Milkwood. Very different story involving a small boy whose parents move to a village in the country from a town. The boy is unusual in some way but is befriended by an artist. The story is in turn amusing and heartbreaking and full of imaginative descriptions and wonder.

Just wonderful
I have read reviews of the hardcopy of this book and I cannot for one minute understand how it can even be written down on paper. This is a wonderful, atmospheric story of the natural world, of friendship and of a funny little boy who knows just how to bring everyone together. I loved the brilliant recording of this - the interwoven voices heard by Papa Toothwort are just fabulous and the voices of Lanny, Jolie and Pete are perfect. I loved listening to this little book and I am sure you will too.
