About this listen

Hattie is a woman with great hair and the unusual ability to see all creatures of magic, whether they want to be seen or not.

On her way to visit the Ice Giants in the Scottish Highlands, nothing could disrupt Hattie's plans.

Except an unreliable car. And a stowaway forest spirit....

The third book in the Edinburgh Elementals series.

Not really 'Edinburgh', but then, who cares!

What made the experience of listening to Land of the Ice Giants the most enjoyable?

Same as for the two previous instalments: there an indescribable fuzzy feeling coming from both the story itself, but also the way the narrator renders it.

What other book might you compare Land of the Ice Giants to, and why?

The universe seems to relate to those of Harry Dresden, PC Grant (especially, ihmo) or Alex Verus, but the style is unrelated.

What does Chris Barnes bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

See above: I get this indescribable fuzzy feeling while listening. I could be the only one experiencing this though. I guess the Scottish accent and the soft way Barnes narrates is what I like so much.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

bring on no.4

Would you listen to Land of the Ice Giants again? Why?

unsure... but maybe as it was fun

What was one of the most memorable moments of Land of the Ice Giants?

the colour descriptions

Have you listened to any of Chris Barnes’s other performances? How does this one compare?

yes, i think he really enjoyed doing this one as he was a lot more stretched! plus the story was good fun

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

yes

Any additional comments?

Hattie finds a Forest Spirit in her boot who happens to think he is a God, in fact he is just a grumpy git called Vic. However, she has been tasked with a job by the elusive coven and is on her way North.
Unfortunately, Hattie’s car breaks down on the way to see the Ice Giants. She finds a lovely B&B owner, Mrs Dinky and the lovely mechanic Carl.
As they carry on their journey it was very LotR in its enormity with huge ice statues guarding the entrance etc.
Loved the colour descriptions.
I can’t give the ending away but I do hope Gayle Ramage writes a few more.
Vic has all the fun lines and I would really like to have him in more stories. A few more giggles in this one, but still felt a bit serious.
I think Chris Barnes had a riot reading this one, it really showed. Although I think his English accent needs some work!

Excellent

Another excellent instalment in the Edinburgh Elementals series, this one is double the length of the others...yay! At just under an hour long it is easy to listen to it in one go and I'd recommend doing so. The characters are fun and interesting. Chris Barnes does an impressive job with the narration, it's smooth and fluid, his performance of Vic is hilarious.

I liked the first one better

Struggled to get into this and then the ending was rather sudden. It doesn't have the same feel as the first book which I have listened to repeatedly. I do however love the accents and the voice used for Hattie's character is amazing.
