Summary

Toby Clements's fourth and final instalment in the Kingmaker historical series, set during England's bloody and brutal War of the Roses.

1470. The recent tensions between King Edward and his great ally the Earl of Warwick lie forgotten these past months, but even as winter tightens her grip on the land, the peace is shattered by a vicious attack on one of the King's allies.

Long buried secrets are brought to the surface, and Thomas and Katherine must finally decide where their loyalties lie and to choose between fight or flight, knowing either choice will incur a terrible price.

From Lincoln to Bruges, from Barnet to the great battle at Tewkesbury, both must play their part in one of the most savage wars in history: The War of the Roses.

Surely this cannot be the last book in this series

Surely Toby Clements can find it in him to cover the period following "the peace" post 1470 and lead us to Bosworth in another of his captivating stories

Gripping in parts

Comes together very well and makes the listener draw into the plot. An excellent narration from Jack Hawkins, who is clearly a master narrator.
I have enjoyed all four of this series, which gives a clear insight into the turbulent times of the War of the Roses. Though the gore and action is very vividly described, this is not detrimental to the overall plot, but underpins it.

A great final book

The narrator is great. The whole series is fantastic. It has some of the best written action scenes and the characters are well developed; I become truly invested in what happened to them. I will be looking into the author's other books and books by the same narrator

Story line, writing & narration... All awesome!

I listened to all 4 books, one after the other. I loved the story from the very beginning to the very end. I found it very difficult to put down and now that it is over... well, in truth, I'm rather sad. The characters had become daily companions. Even the best writing though, can be tarnished by poor reading. Not in this case. I have no idea what voices Toby Clements had in mind for his heroes, but I can't imagine that he could have hoped for a more convincing and flawless narration than the one delivered by Jack Hawkins. Even if you're not a fan of historical novels, I think you'll love this!

Excellent

I really enjoyed this book/series. Sad to see the last of it. Hopefully the author is working on his next book. Narrator is perfect and able to pull off both male and female parts. Impossible to imagine Thomas and Katherine with any other voices.

Brilliant!

Loved the series and a fantastic way to end. A bloody, brutal but very personal depiction of the Wars of the Roses. Expertly narrated too.

Great story, well told!

Brilliant in bringing history to life Forgotten all this since studying for A levels. And appreciated the author's notes, too. What a story to read during BREXIT!
