About this listen
A private server. A digital playground. An alliance of the world's most sadistic, most depraved minds. A place to bring their prey, to hone their skills.
Kaiju: Battlefield Surgeon. Survival horror. One of the most brutal, most terrifying full-immersion games ever made. A place where fantasy characters such as elves and dwarves clash with technology, where giant monsters roam the hills, entrusted with protecting the gates of heaven from the demons who would tear it all down.
A game where one plays the last of the battlefield surgeons: a healer tasked with keeping the behemoths alive at all costs.
But on this server, they don't care about the game. That's not why they're here. They've come because of the game's most unique feature: full pain. Realistic anatomy. The ability to bring their victims well beyond the body's normal breaking point. And most importantly, the ability to bring them back and do it all over again.
Trapped in a bloody, merciless nightmare, Duke only has one goal: to survive. And in order to survive, he must play the game. He must win the game. And to do that, he must become the most cruel, most ruthless monster of them all.

great concept, not so great execution
while the story sounds like a great concept the writing and vocal work leaves a little to be desired.
some things that should be short are too long, some things that should have greater detail and length are almost skipped over altogether.
it held my attention for the most part but it was frequently hard work.

Worth a listen if you like dark stories.
This is quite dark and gruesome. I give it a solid 4. Someone pointed out that certain parts that are short should have been longer and some of the longer parts should have been shorter and this is true. Overall if you like dark and gruesome stories this one is pretty good. If you're coming from listening to DCC this isn't like that. There are some parts that are funny but it's mostly not.

Pretty heavy stuff here
Enjoyed the story, very unique game concept. There's a fair bit of torture porn here and a few very heavy subjects definitely wasn't expecting it though overall I enjoyed the book.

Hit Hard for personal Reasons
loosing a child is a pain not many can describe and a subject dam near impossible to make funny. gallows humor, I'm a not offended by this story. it resonates with the pain and suffering and the places the mind goes to. The Void is a real place and this vission of hell is what's it like to live in your own mind trapped by rage anger and turmoil and injustice.
I don't know if Matt has lost a child or felt the Void and anger but it seems that way. being tortured with your own child like the protagonist in this book is as described and felt like Matt understood what it takes to get through this surreal life journey when hitting the eject is not an option. the bit where Samantha is shown her child being told your mother didn't love you was the worst torture 💔 😢
Dads who love their children and would die for them in a hart beat, having to fight a system that....
it's a good story, very dark. to dark sometimes but would still recomend it

Convoluted
I liked the long and convoluted story threads. They keep the story running like the blood through the vanes of this odd organism of a story. I disliked the pseudo-religeous aspects overlayed with cyber science-fiction. Some "gory" aspects also feel artificial and forced. I liked the difference to a lot of existing literature. The whole story feels like swimming through syrupy lead with no relief.

Darker than the title or author's other works
It's clear how much the author has developed over the course of writing his later works, Dungeon Crawler Carl. This one is brutal, a horror story in LitRPG style.
What stood out to me were the places where an editor would really have improved it. The frequent repeat use of big words where smaller ones would have sounded more genuine, like "utilize".
I enjoyed it, but I don't think I'll be listening to the author's other early works. Carl will do for me.

Really enjoyable
Initially blanched at 18+ hours but it has flown by. Very enjoyable story, first RPG type book I have read, won't be my last.
