Summary

A revolutionary experiment in space opens a woman’s eyes to the meaning of solitude in a thought-provoking short story by New York Times bestselling, award-winning author Nnedi Okorafor.

Tornado Onwubiko is one of seven people on Earth paired with sentient ships to explore and research the cosmos for twenty million euros. A decade of solitary life for a lifetime of wealth. Five years into the ten-year mission of total isolation comes a consolation: a temporary meetup among fellow travelers. A lot can happen in a week. For Tornado, who left a normal life behind, a little company can be life-changing.

Nnedi Okorafor’s Just Out of Jupiter’s Reach is part of The Far Reaches, a collection of science-fiction stories that stretch the imagination and open the heart. They can be read or listened to in one sitting.

Captivating short story

Got totally lost in this, so refreshing to read sci fi that isn't all about war and metal and misery! Great characters. Some of the accents were done pretty badly which was a little jarring. Apart from that I loved the narrator.

Imaginative and quite beautiful.

The idea of winning a 'lottery' and dna testing almost put me off, but I'm glad I didn't let it. The story moved on at exactly the right pace, and felt emotionally true. The seven days with their fellows was obviously the highlight of the story, and very moving. The narrator's rhythmic style was an absolute joy to hear. I love a good short story, but I often wish they were longer. This was perfect as it was and concluded in such a way that there could be no expansion. A wonderful gem of a story.

An unusual story beautifully performed

Such original and imaginative writing. Written with sensitivity that creates a strong connection to the characters and an extraordinary view of the world

Not interesting

Getting through this was a chore. Thank goodness it was so short. One to avoid. The performance was fine, but the vase work was not worthwhile.
