About this listen

Jeremy Brett's performances as Sherlock Holmes over a period of more than 10 years are to this day collectively considered the definitive iteration of everyone's favourite master sleuth. Jeremy delighted viewers with his dashing, arrogant, moody interpretation of the most popular famous detective. He brought a brooding intensity to his finest role - one of disturbing power.

In this audiobook, Maureen Whittaker takes the listener on an intimate journey through the entire Granada Sherlock Holmes series, exploring and analysing the decisions, process and reaction to Brett's portrayal of Holmes. Using an array of first-hand reflections from those involved in the production of the series - and from Jeremy himself - listeners will hear, episode by episode, how Brett constructed his interpretation of the world's only unofficial consulting detective. From the initial decision to cast Brett, his ambivalence to accepting the role, the initial challenges of bringing that fascinating character to life, the impact of the loss of his wife, to the ongoing success of the portrayal until his failing health prematurely ended his life, this audiobook is perfect for fans of Jeremy Brett, with an intimate portrayal of a complex man playing a complex role.

With more than 50 chapters and almost 10 hours of audio, this is the perfect addition to any Sherlock Holmes fan's bookshelf.

Essential for any Holmes or Brett fan.

This is an exceptionally well researched and written biography. My one criticism is that the writer is so fixated by Jeremy Brett that great performances by Eric Porter, Robert Hardy, Anthony Valentine, Peter Wyngarde and Jonathan Hyde, who held your attention just as much as Brett and without whom the series would have been diminished are hardly mentioned - if at all. This is a strange omission as though the writer is so enamoured of Brett that no one else is allowed to share the limelight. That’s my only criticism.

Oh dear, where do I start??

How can this be for sale at all when it makes such a mockery of Doyle? What would it take for a professional to actually Google the Holmes stories to get the titles right, instead of getting it so ridiculously wrong?! The Blue Cob Uncle, The Copper Beaches, The Spec Heled Banned, The Bryuce Patterns Plans, The Hound of the Baskaville, Jermy and Jerm, and, best of all - The Abby Grinch!!!
There are more - that's just a sample. It's absolutely ridiculous and incredibly unprofessional.
Further the narrator frequently misplaces the emphasis when quoting from the book - and, when quoting the book or anyone else, he insists on saying the very obvious word 'QUOTE' first - most of the time, this is totally unnecessary, incredibly repetitive, and totally interrupts the flow of the narrative.
The book is also badly written and poorly proofed. Lots of interesting facts, some of which are inaccurate.

Joke chapter titles?

Let down by the chapter titles, did a double take, might just as well called the book Sherlock HOMES!!!
Was it done over the phone phonetically?
