About this listen
Alan Thorne, the son of a soldier and a midwife from the Welsh Valleys, rose through the ranks of his local police force to become a chief superintendent in his early 40s, with an outstanding reputation and several awards and commendations to his credit. However, along the road he made one or two enemies. This is the story of how a decent "top copper" found himself framed by jealous colleagues for a nonexistent offence and had no choice but to resign from the force and rebuild his life - and how he then found himself facing a terrible personal tragedy. A fascinating and very frank insight into how policing works - and how sometimes it doesn't.

Interesting, enlightening and emotional
Memoirs and biographies are not usually my thing, but a friend recommended this. It starts off with the author's (also the narrator) early life giving a good insight into what his whole upbringing was like. It moves through his life, early career and goes on to relate a quite shocking episode in the middle. It then goes up, then back down, altogether a real roller coaster of a story. The fact that the author narrates this himself just adds to the emotion and makes for a really - as the title of my review - interesting, enlightening and emotional listen. Altogether satisfying.

excellent
This was a riveting story. Not the usual police memoir, but a really heart-warming account of what life can really be like. It was just as if the author took me on a journey.Thoroughly recommended.

What a story....
Although I know the author, this story is a true reflection of the life of a highly motivated professional Police Officer who's career was cut short by Jealous individuals, and the turmoil that followed.
I hope Mr David Hulme gets to read it.

Do not buy
This is the story of an angry ex-copper that got done for drink-driving there is no story here there is no moral story here this is just an angry bloke who very unfortunately lost his wife and of course I sympathise absolutely with that,
But the story from the outset p him as a hero and everybody else as a naughty boy or girl.
Everybody apart from him seems to get the blame
And it does strike me is very suspicious that if as he said he was never going to be over the limit he wouldn’t provide a breath specimen in other words it was over the limit drink drive down to you
