日本には昔から、ご飯に湯や水をかけた「水飯」や「湯漬け」という料理があり、平安時代の文学にも登場します。
太った貴族がダイエット食として食べていたという物語も残っています。
室町時代に、将軍が酒に酔った時に食べたことから、湯漬けを食べる習慣が普及したといわれます。
