Summary
When the mutants' survival is threatened, will Isabella risk it all for the man she hardly knows, or stay underground protected?
Fifty years ago, the Earth died. The Earth is now a fertile but dangerous jungle world. Wildlife has prospered, although often in oddly altered forms. Survivors live in underground shelters waiting generations for the environment to become safe enough to emerge. Above ground, the radiation and poison has mutated the few humans that are left, but they do their best to survive for the 20 to 22 years they might live before the toxic planet or disease kills them.
Sixteen-year-old Isabella has grown up believing mutants are sub-human, stupid, and would eat every shelter person if they had the chance, until she spies a wandering mutant tribe through the glass bottom swimming pool that is her shelter's only light source. Isabella is fascinated by them, but it's their 17-year-old leader, Malcolm, who truly captivates her - ebony skin, straw-colored hair, rippling muscles, four fingers on one hand and six on the other. Night after night, she sneaks out of her shelter to watch the tribe, dressed in her grandfather's chemical/radiation suit. When Malcolm discovers her, they are wary of each other at first, but eventually become friends, and then lovers. Isabella finally leaves the safety of her shelter to follow Malcolm into the perilous Outside.
Isabella knows the government plans to exterminate the mutants once it is safe for the shelter-folk to come Outside, and she expects radiation and disease, but no one in the tribe is prepared for cannibals!
Isabella's family mourns for their lost child, knowing she will die Outside, but Grandfather refuses to search for her. Luke defies him and leaves the shelter to track down Isabella and warn her of the threat she knows nothing about. But he is no more prepared for the dangers Outside than she is. Hunted and finally captured by the military, Luke must escape their grasp, find Isabella, and save her life.

Good start
I enjoyed listening to this first book however I am not entirely sure about the series as a whole until I listen to the other books.
The narrator is good however just not my cup of tea. The conversations between characters came across awkward. I will listen to the other two books though.

An Interesting Series Scene Setter.
We're in the not too distant future, humanity has destroyed itself and just a few enclaves remain. We follow two small groups, one had foreseen the disaster coming and built a self contained underground nuclear bunker another live on the contaminated surface. The central characters are children having to be adults in this new world and how they cope when members of the two groups meet and overcome their fear and mistrust of each other. An interesting listen, very well narrated, and sets the characters, back story and scenes well for the series.

Post-apocalyptic Drama
I received this book via a promo code and this is my honest voluntary review.
The concept of this story was so promising but the narration left a lot to be desired. Carlo Libertini did this book like he was reading to preschooler's and the performance was very wooden. Which is a shame because the story itself is very good.

I found this slow going. It took a while before anything interesting started to happen. I also found it odd that the outsiders had kids at a very young age (like 10 years old), I found that hard to believe.
The consept is OK and could have been more interesting if something more interesting happened. The next book might be more better.

A different theme in the post-apocalyptic genre
This starts out differently to the standard post-apoc book, and I really liked the storyline
I found the narrator a little excitable, as he enthusiastically described events which are quite dire which was a little to much for me (but the author has a different narrator for book 2&3 which is an improvement)
This was quite a scene setting books, and I have eagerly followed with books 2 and 3
