Summary
One of the inspirations for the major motion picture Everest, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Keira Knightley.
This is the true story of a 24-hour period on Everest when members of three separate expeditions were caught in a storm and faced a battle against hurricane-force winds, exposure, and the effects of altitude, which ended the worst single-season death toll in the peak's history.
In March 1996, Outside magazine sent veteran journalist and seasoned climber Jon Krakauer on an expedition led by celebrated Everest guide Rob Hall. Despite the expertise of Hall and the other leaders, by the end of summit day eight people were dead.
Krakauer's audiobook is at once the story of the ill-fated adventure and an analysis of the factors leading up to its tragic end. Written within months of the events it chronicles, Into Thin Air clearly evokes the majestic Everest landscape. As the journey up the mountain progresses, Krakauer puts it in context by recalling the triumphs and perils of other Everest trips throughout history. The author's own anguish over what happened on the mountain is palpable as he leads his listeners to ponder timeless questions.

This was a great listen. The book is about the 1996 Everest disaster where numerous people failed to return from the summit. The book follows the climbers as they begin their journey to the end. It was good listening to the truth of the conditions and the dangers of the mountain. This is definitely a book I would recommend about how dangerous Everest and the conditions are. x

A harrowing account
A harrowing account which makes the reader step back and think. BUT, I often switched off due to the never ending reference to names and dates

Watched the film and this book is even better
I watched the 2016 blockbuster film about the '96 disaster, and as per usual the audiobook is better. Great story, great performance (although the audio track did repeat itself for 20 seconds half a dozen times). Well worth a listen

A heart wrenching first hand account
This was a clear and well written account of those who were on the mountain when this disaster happened. I found it a frank description of the events and the people involved and was moved by the author's compassion, empathy and deep felt loss.

Thrilling and sad
The story was well documented and emotional. Having seen the film prior it didn't ruin anything. The narrator did an excellent job, except when trying to do any accents other than American.
