About this listen

For Jacob and Daniel, two young gay men aboard a US Navy ship in WWII, the risks are high. Not only the risks of injury and death from Japanese planes and submarines, but the risk of discovery. Only a special kind of love is worth taking that chance. But from the moment Daniel meets Jacob's eyes across a battle-scarred deck, he knows he has to try. Being together requires figuring out what it means to be gay in an era when they could be discharged, imprisoned, or worse for admitting the desires of their hearts. Their relationship is measured in stolen moments and rare days of precious leave, with no guarantee there will be a tomorrow. And, if they survive the war, they will need even more luck to keep their love alive through the years to come.

This novel was written as part of the Goodreads M/M Romance Group's 2012 Don't Read in the Closet writing event: Love is Always Write. It won the 2012 LGBT Rainbow Award for Best Gay Historical Romance in 2012 and has been rated by more than 1,300 users on Goodreads with an average rating of 4.41 stars.

as good as the ebook

The story is always full stars, because if I wouldn't like the story as ebook, I wouldn't listen to the audiobook. I can't listen to an audiobook without knowing the book, that's not possible for me.

The performance from the narrator is also very important for me. I can't listen to a lot, because my English as a non-native-speaker isn't so perfect to follow a whole story over hours, when the narrator speaks too fast or too sloppy. Normally I have to SEE the person, who is talking to me in English. It took me a little bit, to come into the narrator, but at the end, it worked. I only have to take a few breaks between. I'm just not yet finish with the book, I’m over the half, but I listen enough to give a review.

PLEASE READ MY RATING SYSTEM!!!

To my ratings:

5* - very very good
it's like an A+

4* - very good and will be often re-listening
it's like an A

3* - it's more then a one-time-listening.
it's like a B

Beautiful and loving ❤️.

Some mascara warning ⚠️ as it is a little bit of a tear jerker.
Some angst.
Amazing how the LGBTq+ of yester year managed and were so brave. Love is Love.

This story and audiobook is worth at least ten sta

I'm not sure how long I had this audiobook in my Audible library before I finally made time to listen to it. However long, it was too long. It's one of the most amazing stories I've listened to in quite a while. Not only does it span decades in a way that was amazing, it was just an absolutely beautifully told story. Yes, there is some angst due to the subject matter and time period that the story takes place during, but there is also the most wonderful HEA.

I probably picked this up originally because of a recommendation I got somewhere. I think I was slightly hesitant to listen to the audiobook because I was unfamiliar with the narrator/performer and sometimes samples don't always tell you enough. In any case, this story will stick with me for a long time. It's already been about two weeks since I listened to it and I can still remember it all vividly.

Kaleo Griffith's voice was perfect for this story and I'm so happy that I finally listened to it.

An amazing narrator for a brilliant story....

Millions of truly outstanding stars. The story was brilliant, the characters, the pacing, the LOVE....just EVERYTHING was amazing, and at one point I had tears rolling down my face AND was chuckling at the same time [get towards the end of the story, you'll know which part I mean]. I know I would've have been thrilled to bits with this story if I was a gay guy...Kaje absolutely wrote it from the heart. How CAN it be right that a couple can be in a relationship for 26 years (at that time 1940's to 1960's), and one half of that relationship, Jacob, has to keep everything under wraps from his family and his workmates and go through life as though his other half Daniel, his HEART...his FAMILY doesn't exist?? Stonewall was mentioned at length...and THAT was the catalyst for Jacob to finally find the courage to stick his middle finger up at his father and live his life as he chose. Thank God he had a sister Lily who loved him to bits and dragged both of them into her family, where they became uncles to her children.

As for Kaleo Griffith's narration, well... as he doesn't seem to have done a lot of M/M, I was completely gobsmacked by how fantastic he was!! As Daniel and Jacob got older, Kaleo's voice became more gruff and got deeper...his characterisation was wonderful, and I can't recommend this audio book highly enough. It's on a par with The Tin Box for me...highs and lows in emotion, loads of tears, an incredible story and superb storytelling from the narrator. Congrats all round, and thank you Kaje for your interpretation of the prompt.

True love

A story of love through the second world war and onwards the difficulties that two men went through and to survive, touching story of love that survived PTSD homophobic parants to a touching end. Anyone who lived through these years will be touched.

Lovely - very moving story

The story follows two men - from the perils of WW2 through difficult times in the late 20th century. The narrator did a great job with the voices - from young to old. He was very easy to listen to and I will look out for more books narrated by him. (I already know I like Kaje’s books!)
