Summary
THE GLOBAL #1 BESTSELLER
'Intermezzo is perfect ... Is there a better novelist at work right now?' Anthony Cummins, Observer
'Her most mature and moving book to date ... I read it in a state of rapture.' Johanna Thomas-Corr, Sunday Times
'If a perfect Sally Rooney novel exists, this might just be it . Her best novel yet.' Evening Standard
'Rooney has discovered her full literary prowess.' Jo Hamya, Independent
From the author of the multimillion-copy bestseller Normal People, an exquisitely moving story about grief, love and family.
Aside from the fact that they are brothers, Peter and Ivan Koubek seem to have little in common.
Peter is a Dublin lawyer in his thirties - successful, competent and apparently unassailable. But in the wake of their father's death, he's medicating himself to sleep and struggling to manage his relationships with two very different women - his enduring first love Sylvia, and Naomi, a college student for whom life is one long joke.
Ivan is a twenty-two-year-old competitive chess player. He has always seen himself as socially awkward, a loner, the antithesis of his glib elder brother. Now, in the early weeks of his bereavement, Ivan meets Margaret, an older woman emerging from her own turbulent past, and their lives become rapidly and intensely intertwined.
For two grieving brothers and the people they love, this is a new interlude - a period of desire, despair and possibility - a chance to find out how much one life might hold inside itself without breaking.

intelligent prose
the story floored me really, I found the story so compelling, the little snapshot of time following a bereavement. it was such a beautiful story and the narrator was an excellent choice.

Forensic exploration of grief
It took me a little longer to get into this, compared to previous Sally Rooney books, but I was drawn in so deep I felt I was living it.
The writing is so focused and detailed and yet so effortless and natural that each nuance, every thought and emotion is perfectly realised.
Sad and beautiful, I didn’t want it to end.

Breathtaking
Amazing work. Sometimes difficult but all worth it. It reaches deep into your heart even when sometimes the intellectualisation goes over your head (a paper book would probably be better for these moments). The authenticity in the two men’s voices, the seemingly insignificant descriptions of nature, people, feelings- brilliantly crafted.

Snorefest
I have never listened to s book that so instantly sent me to sleep. The narration was so flat, so lifeless that it was like a stage curtain descending whenever the reader started, sleep overtook me. The story, dull as dishwater, just didn't have a single hook to keep me listening. Don't know how anyone enjoyed it.

Incredible overall
Incredible performance, story and writing. Quite possibly her best piece of writing. The reading of it was done so beautifully. I wish I could experience it again for the first time.

Beautiful characterisation
It was a brilliant book with complex and intriguing characters. Rooneys writing added depth and insight into the characters thoughts and feelings and creating mushroomed conflicting sympathies. Incredibly moving and heartfelt.

Excellent
Loved the story, the nuanced characters and the very different style of writing between both personality types. A story of two brothers and the relationship between them and the people in their lives. A quirky story but beautifully written and read. Loved every minute of it.

Beautiful prose, beautifully read
Absolutely loved this reading of Rooney’s latest novel. Even the more experimental passages are rendered accessible.

I love love loved this
This book. Where do I start! The brothers relationship, the relationship with Christine (who they never call mum), the grief, the depression, the romantic relationships (sprinkling in a little polygamy). Sally Rooney just has a way of making characters 3D she really brings her characters to life. And the last note is the writing which is of course exceptional.
