About this listen

#1 New York Times Bestseller

Past midnight, Chyna Shepard, twenty-six, gazes out a moonlit window, unable to sleep on her first night in the Napa Valley home of her best friend’s family. Instinct proves reliable. A murderous sociopath, Edgler Foreman Vess, has entered the house, intent on killing everyone inside. A self-proclaimed “homicidal adventurer,” Vess lives only to satisfy all appetites as they arise, to immerse himself in sensation, to live without fear, remorse, or limits, to live with intensity. Chyna is trapped in his deadly orbit.

Chyna is a survivor, toughened by a lifelong struggle for safety and self-respect. Now she will be tested as never before. At first her sole aim is to get out alive - until, by chance, she learns the identity of Vess’s next intended victim, a faraway innocent only she can save. Driven by a newly discovered thirst for meaning beyond mere self-preservation, Chyna musters every inner resource she has to save an endangered girl...as moment by moment, the terrifying threat of Edgler Foreman Vess intensifies.

Critic reviews

“Chills the reader to the core and establishes Koontz as a master.”—Associated Press

“Tumbling, hallucinogenic prose . . . The story does not move so much as rocket up the . . . gloomy highway with the reader in violent pursuit.”—The New York Times

“The most viscerally exciting thriller of the year.”—Publishers Weekly

Long drawn out.

Disappointed. Too many thoughts of the main character. Was able to go away snd return to find not much has changed. Good intense parts. DK had written better.

Koontz at his best

I saw this as a film a few years back and was absolutely fascinated by the evilness of this character , but in reading the book it goes into much more detail about the heroin
this book is thrilling horrifying, however I suppose it displays also no matter how bad things can get you can always find your way through it
you will love this read, if you're into a memorable horror story (no supernatural stuff) just pure human evil. I pray to God that there is no one out there like this ,the insanity and genius of the main character, it will definitely give you chills but it has a good ending, sort of.

Really good thriller/mild horror novel

Very well narrated, and a nicely flowing story. Very violent and disturbing at times. I really liked the main character who you really begin to root for once finding out her back story.

Decent airport novel, poorly performed.

Sadly this serviceable thriller, which picks up well towards the second half was narrated in a decidedly flat voice which failed to modulate effectively and left it lacking "intensity". Shame.

Could be good without the overdone descriptions

The basic story is good but the author has overdone the sentimentality and drawn out descriptions of unnecessary tripe.
The narrator hasn’t preread the book as she manages to mispronounce certain words which is sometimes cringeworthy

Fantastic.❤️👍

I read this novel many years ago,and the audio version dosent deminish it,Frankie Corzo does a great job as narrator.Edgler Foreman Vess is a great Character, who you wouldnt want to run in to.I did read the first Odd Thomas novel, and while it wasnt my cup of tea,Mr Koontz more than makes up for it with this and other novels.I will deffinatly look for audio books narrated by Frankie Corzo.
