Summary

News people have a saying: 'If it bleeds, it leads'. And a bomb at Albert Macready Middle School is guaranteed to lead any bulletin.

Holly Gibney of the Finders Keepers detective agency is working on the case of a missing dog - and on her own need to be more assertive - when she sees the footage on TV. But when she tunes in again, to the late-night report, she realises there is something not quite right about the correspondent who was first on the scene. So begins 'If It Bleeds', a stand-alone sequel to the No. 1 bestselling THE OUTSIDER featuring the incomparable Holly on her first solo case - and also the riveting title story in Stephen King's brilliant new collection.

Dancing alongside are three more wonderful long stories from this 'formidably versatile author' (The Sunday Times) - 'Mr Harrigan's Phone', 'The Life of Chuck' and 'Rat'. All four display the richness of King's storytelling with grace, humour, horror and breathtaking suspense. A fascinating Author's Note gives us a wonderful insight into the origin of each story and the writer's unparalleled imagination.

Four great stories from Stephen King

I have to admit first of all that it is a long time since I have read anything by Stephen King. I have watched a few of the film adaptations of some of his famous books though. Having a spare credit this month and seeing this new release I thought I would give it a go. And I am glad that I did as this is a collection of four shortish stories all of which are great. No spoilers but here is an overview of each

1, Mr. Harrigan’s Phone in which a young boy introduces an old man to the joys of an early edition iPhone resulting in mysterious events
2. The LIfe of Chuck which is set in the near future and reminds me of a Black Mirror episode
3. If it Bleeds which is, apparently, a sequel to an earlier work Outsiders and tells the story of links between certain mass casualties over a 60 year period
4. Rat, my favourite of all in which a struggling author is haunted by a talking rat (Norwegian Brown)

These are all unique and compelling and I will certainly go back and explore more of Stephen King's back catalogue on the strength of these stories.

Another great book from Stephen King!

This is another great collection of stories from the master of horror. All 4 stories are brilliantly crafted and it's great to be re-united with Holly, Jerome, Barbara and Pete again as we get another instalment from The Outsider series. I thought that was going to be my favourite story from the collection but The Life of Chuck was incredibly good. I found it engrossing and ultimately quite sad but overall, it was extremely enjoyable. I can't wait for the next offering...

Fabulous Stories - yes Stories

Wasn't expecting multiple stories so I thoroughly enjoyed this.

All of the stories were so engaging. I've been listening while exercising and it was so motivating for me to go running or cycling.

I can't get enough of Holly Gibney and I was delighted she was mentioned in the author's note. I hope this means we'll have more from her.

First timer

This is the first Stephen King book I’ve “ read “ and it was very enjoyable, friends told me he writes weird and gory books, so I wasn’t really looking forward to it, but I’ve been pleasantly surprised by this one. ... because it’s an audio book, also my first time, I think it will probably be my last one, as I found myself dozing off after half an hour or so but I may check out some of his hard copy books in the future.

The brilliance of King coupled with outstanding narrators

Like almost every King book, it’s brilliant. But this is read by some of the best narrators I’ve heard. Holly Gibneys curious speaking pattern is excellently portrayed. If you’re a King fan or curious about what happened after the Outsider, you’ll love this book.

Storytelling at its best

Amazing story telling from one of the best to ever do it, all four stories were individually brilliant

The Master!

I'm a big Stephen King fan but I usually prefer his novels to the short story collections but this was simply perfect!
All for stories were excellent!

A worthwhile read

Highly anticipated, because the follow-up to the outsider is included. I would recommend you read the Bill Hodge’s trilogy and the outsider first - in that order - but not essential. My verdict is that it’s very good, and I didn’t want to put it down. In reality when I look back at each story, they’re quite simple and not obviously great from any synopsis. However the way SK writers them makes each very good. The characters are fab. The second story I’ll need to listen to again, so to help you it’s 3 linked stories, in reverse order. Rat reminds me of Jack Torrance at the overhang hotel, you’ll get what I mean. If it needs itself is a worthy follow-up. A neat story with your favourite characters returning. So a very good book
