About this listen
A. L. Graziadei's Icebreaker is an irresistible YA debut about two hockey players fighting to be the best - and the romance that catches them by surprise along the way.
Seventeen-year-old Mickey James III is a college freshman, a brother to five sisters, and a hockey legacy. With a father and a grandfather who have gone down in NHL history, Mickey is almost guaranteed the league's top draft spot.
The only person standing in his way is Jaysen Caulfield, a contender for the number one spot and Mickey's infuriating (and infuriatingly attractive) teammate. When rivalry turns to something more, Mickey will have to decide what he really wants and what he's willing to risk for it.
This is a story about falling in love, finding your team (on and off the ice), and choosing your own path.

Excellent
I wasn’t sure when this started, but by god I loved soon after. Very resonant and just brilliantly drawn out.

Cute and important
I know depression and what it does with you. This story reflects that well. Sometimes I wanted a bit more highs to go with the lows in the second part. You heard about all that went wrong with matches but not about the good ones. Why? I also kept wondering why Jaysen even bothered when getting absolutely nothing but meh from M. So some kind of response would have been good for the story I think. Still, I liked the pace and the storytelling quite a bit.
The story kept away from the usual norms about hockey guys which was refreshing. The boys on the team was sweet, cozy and understanding, same with the families. They knew that this is not reality in general, and we know that. But still, I liked having this instead of deepening the view of all hockey guys as intolerant jerks. Like something to aim for and encourage.
Narrator was a bit blank at start but got really good after a while. Like he softened up to the story.
I hope for a part two and will look for more by the narrator.

Great character
Well written, realistic character. Well narrated. Kept me interested. But please tell me this was a Part One. This story just petered out and I want more.
Being the first reviewer of a debut makes it hard for me to delete a star because of the ending.

An Excellent MM Romance
This book has gay and bisexual MCs, with bi, lesbian and polyamorous side characters too. It’s a hockey MM romance, and is technically YA as the MCs are 17 when the story starts, although they are in their first year in college… What I loved most about the book was the way it explored mental health challenges (depression specifically) and the MC navigating that. It was done very honestly, but sensitively too, and it had me in tears a few times. The narrator on this one was good.
