About this listen
Brought to you by Penguin.
‘Made me so angry I had to stop listening to it while driving. Superb’ THE SECRET BARRISTER
Something has gone really wrong in Britain.
Our economy has tanked, our freedoms are shrinking, and social divisions are growing. Our politicians seem most interested in their own careers, and much of the media only make things worse. We are living in a country almost unrecognisable from the one that existed a decade ago. But whose fault is it really? Who broke Britain and how did they do it?
Bold and incisive as ever, James O'Brien reveals the shady network of influence that has created a broken Britain of strikes, shortages and scandals. He maps the web connecting dark think tanks to Downing Street, the journalists complicit in selling it to the public and the media bosses pushing their own agendas. Over ten chapters, each focusing on a particular person complicit in the downfall, James O'Brien reveals how a select few have conspired - sometimes by incompetence, sometimes by design - to bring Britain to its knees.

Critic reviews
"How They Broke Britain made me so angry I had to stop listening to it while driving. Superb work." (The Secret Barrister)
"A damning account of how the country ended up in the current mess . . . O’Brien’s scathing voice provides a thorough record of the self-serving actions and pronouncements of those who have held power in Britain." (Tim Jonze)
"The most important political book of the year and a fascinating must-read for anyone who cares about Britain. Eye-opening, jaw-dropping, heart-breaking." (Carol Vorderman)

A seminal expose
A superb expose, and dissemination into the criminal and reckless government presided over by corrupt or incompetent self serving narcissists. This book is both thought provoking and shocking into the ease of how government and the establishment has been corrupted and cowed by the right wing media and influential so called think tanks. How the once sacred offices of state have been mired by incompetent and criminal individuals with a complete lack of e
integrity towards their trusted roles.
Essential reading for anyone wondering how on earth things got as bad as they now are.

A balanced version of events
it sounds sensational most of the time but this is definitely a book that delivers the maxim the truth is stranger than fiction. Wherever you look the UK is well and truly broken whilst others forge ahead.

Intelligent, witty, and powerful
James is a rare voice of reason in an increasingly batshit crazy political landscape. In this impeccably researched, cleverly compiled, and flawlessly delivered 'compendium of crooks' the extent of just how crazy our system has become is laid bare.
With the Brexit debacle as a touch point throughout, we are given a grim insight into what actually created the situation we're now in, and just how this collection of rogues, charlatans, and psychopaths dumped us here.
As much as I loved every minute of James' expert analysis on the architects behind the current state of play in the "u"K (there's nothing united about these kingdoms), it's impossible not to feel a very real existential dread as a result.
Nonetheless, an excellent book...just be sure to have something soothing and positive to hand after listening / reading!

An in depth synopsis as to how we got here
Excellent - clear and incisive - follows the sometimes intricate and sometimes barely disguised networks that allow the truly unexceptional that have graced UK politics for the past 13 years to flourish - beware the critics that will generally bemoan this account without actually pinpointing offending content - they are the puppets and enablers that JOB highlights in this entertaining book that have helped heap manure on this once fine land.

Succinct Overview of a catastrophic political culture
Tremendous overview of a period that will be seen as a disastrous period of history that has polarised U.K.’s place in the World, the potential outlook of the majority suffering austerity, & ripped the infrastructure seismically.
Brilliantly read by the author.
Accolades a plenty for the service offered to the U.K. people and beyond by the author, James O’Brien,. Likewise, a gem of knowledge for posterity.

Incredulous read
There were so many unbelievable aspects of politics and private individuals that I wasn’t aware off! What a brilliant book. 100% recommend but it is depressing… not sure there is much hope now!

Great review
Fearless statements irrespective of who they were about and a timely reminder of everything that got us in this mess rather than the platitudes poured out by politicians and most media.

Scorching stuff from James. The voices cracked me up too! Definitely sheds some new light on things for me. Superbly written and performed.
