Summary

Psychotherapist Martha is reasonably compassionate, but deep down she's losing patience. It seems all her clients want to be something they are not, and it's driving them (and her) out of their minds.

There's Richard Fallon MP, who's convinced that promotion to the front bench is being denied him because of his obese son and a wife who lost all patience with him 20 years ago.

Caroline, who is worried that instead of following the path of celebrity like her, her daughter may go on to study mere physics – thereby consigning her (and more importantly Caroline) to a life of unbearable ordinariness.

Philip, who insists he isn't facing a crisis since his demotion from Good Morning Norfolk to a shopping channel, but whose new girlfriend is 30 years his junior and clearly on the make.

Howard, a chef whose 33-year-old son Aaron is still trying to get a band off the ground, whilst looming resentfully over his parents’ lives from the back bedroom.

And Tony, Howard's boss at the restaurant whose wife thinks he needs therapy. He has no idea why. Mostly he wants to talk about why women are so weird and why he has absolutely no need of a therapist. However he would like Martha to give him a certificate proving his sanity, if possible.

Across a series of 15-minute comedy vignettes, How Does that Make You Feel? offers a fly-on-the-wall view of Martha’s sessions, each one shedding more light on the lives of her entertaining clients.

Starring Frances Tomelty, Roger Allam, Marcella Riordan, Tim McInnerny, Cathy Belton and Rebecca Saire.

Produced and directed by Eoin O’Callaghan.

Brilliant!

I caught intriguing snatches of this on the radio so had to download it and wasn't disappointed. Cleverly written, fantastic cast and one that had me laughing out loud, before slapping a guilty hand over my mouth for so many reasons - sympathy, amazement, absurdity, hilarity and solidarity with both therapist and her regulars. Worth every second...

Therapy, but not as you know it

What a strange series...but one I wholeheartedly recommend. Sometimes funny, sometimes sad and occasionally teeth grindingly irritating - it's a programme I devoured and was actually a little sad when it ended. The actors are superb and really draw you in.

A captivating and comedic take on counselling

While counselling is a serious subject and I have benefited from various audible books dealing with it in this manner, this book is a delightful detour from that.

I enjoyed the 10:45 arrivals to the female therapist's office. She strikes me as a bit dull and repressed with her own story hinted at occasionally (reflecting an ongoing theme in the book of finding purpose in life which involves recognition from some kind of fame/infamy). Each 55 minute session is reduced to 15 in the book and our therapist is a stickler for ending on time, with an invariable (and annoying, after awhile) offer of a tissue, regardless of the state of the exiting client.

The therapist is good at allowing the clients free reign to speak out their hearts and this is what is so engaging and funny in the sessions. I found each of the four or five clients (usually individual but on rare occasions, accompanied by a relative) very engaging, though I had my favourite (I won't prejudice your own choice by divulging mine but I think this one would win out for hilarity, if not always for good sense!).

Since each session is presented in a shortened manner, you get back to each client often and follow with interest how their lives are going-some hilarious things happen and ,like the therapist in her opening comments before each client arrives, begin to worry for some and dread what others (especially the only female client in the sessions) are going to come out with, especially in comments ("projections") about the therapist's appearance.

I see a lot of deeper threads in the stories, such as the poignancy of the human condition and our many relationship struggles, but,to reiterate, it is predominantly a laugh out loud presentation.

After listening right through, I played the first few sessions to my wife and now she insists that we listen to the next few at every available opportunity. It is even better listening to it again in this shared way and noticing so much more the second time round, as well as getting my wife's insights on the characters (as a therapist herself).

This is a great listen for anyone who can relate to parenthood, getting older and relationships, as well as being interested in other people's worries, often colourfully and effectively caricatured for our entertainment and edification.

A realistic view of therapy and it's nuances! I

This was an entertaining and realistic view of therapy, and the nuances of the exchanges in the therapy room whilst being a novel and fiction.. Light heated and fun to listen to..

Great Actors, Great Script

This is a real gem in audible. The characters are beautifully developed and the actors are superb. It is funny, but more that the characters elicit empathy . 10/10

Just wonderful. Loved it - hoping they make more!

I absolutely loved this series. I'd hadn't heard of it previously, but couldn't stop listening - the only reason I didn't put it straight back on, is that I've a long car journey next week and I'm saving it up for that!
All the characters are excellent, but Roger Allam's hapless MP is absolutely superb - it's a pleasure to listen to that man, whatever he does, he's brilliant.
Very funny, sometime poignant and really well written and performed. Highly recommended and I hope there will be more to come,

It's laughably shocking, very well acted. I'll definitely listen to it again. Full marks to all concerned.
