About this listen
What are the strengths of your children? What are their weaknesses? Are they responsible, or are they dependable? What would they do in a situation if...?
If you haven’t asked yourself these questions about your child before, then it is time to start before it’s too late.
Education is important, but character even more so. And it starts in the home.
Children are a direct reflection of their upbringing. How they handle themselves, unexpected problems, setbacks, rejection, or the harsh reality of the world all depends on how and what they were taught. It’s a big but important task, and you may even feel unqualified for the job, but this navigational guide is all you will ever need.
In How Children Succeed, Rachel Burgess offers a 12-step guide on how to raise your children as responsible adults of character and resilience. A mother of three, Rachel not only advises from a place of experience, but from confidence in the results of her daily-tested strategies.
Here’s a peek at some of the topics touched on:
- Teaching responsibility through chores
- Responding emotionally to failure
- Knowing the benefits of high expectation
- Fostering social skills
- Nurturing commitment to learning daily
- Praising kids when they do well
- Promoting healthy choices
- Learning the importance of problem-solving skills
- Understanding the relevance of confidence - physically, emotionally, and intellectually
- Raising an Entrepreneur
Whether you are a new parent, a seasoned parent, a single parent, or a double unit, How Children Succeed is for you. We can never “know enough” when it comes to raising our kids - it takes a village. As the world evolves at such a rapid pace, so do our kids.

There is so much more to education than schooling
This book is a practical guide on how to teach children everything they don't get taught in school. In my opinion, this is more important than remembering facts or solving quadratic equations.
The author provides practical tips and examples which can be applied immediately.
I liked that the author mentions nutrition is that built the foundation for many psychological aspects of development.
The topic of raising an entrepreneur is interesting and I have not seen it covered in other books on the subject.
I will look out for more books by this author.

Great tips for new parents
As a parent, this book intrigued me. I'm always looking for new tips. Although this book represents a woman's point of view, I found that these tips also apply to dads. It is highly recommended, especially for new parents. I will check out other books from this author. I received this book for free in exchange for my unbiased review.

Amazing
Simple, and substantive guide on how you can start preparing your kids for success. As a person with aspergers that was horribly prepared for life, and all it's challenges by my parents. I highly appreciate such books so I can do my part in raising a better, more prepared and smarter future.

Excellent book that delivers on what it says
Narration: I found the narration clear, precise, and well done for the most part. One minor complaint I have is that there were times when the narrator stumbles on words - in some cases, she almost stumbles, catches herself, and course corrects almost immediately, so to most people it might be unnoticeable, but I noticed it, and then there were other moments where she does stumble and pause a bit on certain words. Not a huge complaint, but I think these could have been edited out and redone.
Writing: Writing was very good, very simple, and comprehensive. The book delivers on what it says, with a lot of good practical advice, but also some unique and insightful advice you may not have thought of.
Full disclosure: I was given a free promo code in exchange for an honest review.

Essential Listening For Parents
It was a very interesting listen. It's difficult to remember what it was like to be a child and this guide really helps you to put yourself in the shoes of a child (to understand what they need from their parents). The information relating to the importance of installing confidence in a child was particularly insightful. I would recommend this guide to friends that have children and are trying to create the best path for their little one's happiness and success.

Great relatable advice
I enjoyed this book even more than Rachel’s other book about how to talk to our kids. (Probably thanks to the narrator being so much better - Amy did a very good job, a few mistakes were missed by the editor but it was still a very enjoyable listening experience.
As for the advice given in this book, it’s useful, practical, and Rachel delivers it in a way that is relatable to every walk of life regardless of personal circumstances, without being patronising or condescending. I’ve been going through a difficult stage with my children aged 6 and 3, and I found her book hugely helpful in transforming my parenting and turning it from a highly stressful and exhausting “chore” to a highly rewarding and exciting adventure.
