The seat of the Trelawney family for over 800 years, Trelawney Castle was once the jewel of the Cornish coast. Each successive Earl spent with abandon, turning the house and grounds into a sprawling, extravagant palimpsest of wings, turrets and follies.
But recent generations have been better at spending than making money. Now living in isolated penury, unable to communicate with each other or the rest of the world, the family are running out of options. Three unexpected events will hasten their demise: the sudden appearance of a new relation, an illegitimate, headstrong, beautiful girl; an unscrupulous American hedge fund manager determined to exact revenge; and the crash of 2008.
A love story and social satire set in the parallel and seemingly unconnected worlds of the British aristocracy and high finance, House of Trelawney is also the story of lost and found friendships between three women. One of them will die; another will discover her vocation; and the third will find love.

A disappointment
Hannah's first book was one of my favourites on Audible but this was very weak in comparison.

A captivating story inherent in its Englishness with tangible characters set in evocative surroundings. Delightful.

Really enjoyable
I was searching for something different to my usual listen and stumbled across this book.
It was an easy listen, escapism, thoroughly enjoyable. The narration was good.

Not her best book!
I enjoyed this book, but felt it was rather rushed and there were gaps in the story which I felt weren’t answered? Maybe I missed them but it’s not as good as her first book. It’s a good romp - and a good holiday read.

Escapism
So enjoyable, Hannah Rothschild knows her stuff. A pacy plot with well drawn characters. Recommend.

A great story
I have loved all of Hannah Rothschild's books and this was a great addition to her back catalogue.
Packed full of wonderful characters, some lovely, some ghastly, this was an amusing and entertaining tale of the demise of an ancient aristocratic Cornish family. Set in 2008 at the height of the global financial crash, the author has woven a tale of greed, revenge, social snobbery, romance, misunderstandings, double-dealing and the power of art. It is a fantastically engaging book, which made me laugh out loud at times, wince with embarrassment at other times and hope against hope for the redemption of some of the characters.
A really great read.

Good characterisation of a wealth of people
It's a good story - not the game changer as her previous book but a good read and easy listen storyline. She created some great characters and a complex storyline - would be good to have a sequal.

Entertaining characters if a bit muddled
The narrator is very good. I enjoyed Hannah Rothschild's other book but I think this one is funnier with a faster storyline. If you enjoyed satire and a bit of history this is for you. Very informative about the 2008 financial crisis too.

Wouldn’t recommend
Sorry to say this was not good. Poor writing, superficial and cliched characters, weird audio editing and some really irritating voices.
