Summary
The original India Pale Ale was pure gold in a glass; a beer specially invented, in the 19th century, to travel halfway around the world and arrive in perfect condition for a cold drink on an Indian verandah. But although you can still buy beers with 'IPA' on the label they are a pale imitation of the original. For the first time in 140 years, a keg of Burton IPA has been brewed with the original recipe for a voyage to India by canal and tall ship, and the man carrying it is Pete Brown, Britain's best beer writer.
Brazilian pirates and Iranian customs officials lie ahead, but will he make it that far, having fallen in the canal a few miles out of Burton? And if Pete does make it to the other side of the world, what will the real IPA taste like? Weaving first-class travel writing with assured comedy, this is both a rollicking history of the Raj and an entertaining, groundbreaking experiment to recreate the finest beer ever produced.

Wish I'd just read the book
A good story as ever with Pete. Spoilt by the narration, l know he doesn't speak in R.P. and I'm fairly sure his lovely Welsh wife does not sound like "Lady Isabell Barnet". I found This jarring all the way through. As I say should have read the book.

History, beer and epic travel
What more could you ask for, well a good narrator would be nice, so getting a really, really good one set this book off superbly.
Thank you for this wonderful book that I couldn't stop listening to and felt sorry when done that there wasnt any more.
Consoled myself with a couple of choice IPAs.

India Pale Ale, its rise and fall
What a good idea to retrace and research the history of IPA (India Pale Ale) as it was finally called. Why should a beer brewed in England be taken to India? At what cost, both in the past and now to the author? Where is it now?
All these questions and more are told by Pete Brown in this informative and entertaining book on IPA, the Brewing history of England, India and the sailing ships of old.
Well narrated in a crisp lively manner that made good listening.

Good book but very Smug
What did you like most about Hops and Glory?
It's fun. It's about beer and it's very informative.
How could the performance have been better?
The narrator...he is so smug. I just can't handle more than half an hour at a time. I wish I'd have read the book instead.

A great story and history from the best modern beer writer. I thoroughly enjoy this every time I read or listen to it.

Overall good, well written, dragged on a bit
Was a good book overall, it was well written with the trip and the history connecting well together. It did feel a little long at times and dragged on a bit.

I have now got to drink a pint of real IPA
Fascinating story bits I thought I knew, so much I didn't...but much I hadn't recognised that I'd grown up with.

Well researched but muddled
Took me a few chapters to get used to the [apparently] hapless author, but enjoyed the well researched material. Blending the travel story with the history was not well executed. Generally it all comes across as disjointed and muddled.
