About this listen
A feel-good escape into the world of big-time college turfball, a sport where gladiators like Joe Kaboom are launched over the opposing teams by energy generated by cheerleaders like Ginny Jupiter and Sharon Baryon.
Set in a galaxy long ago, but not so far away, where character triumphs, teamwork is key, and heroism is defined by actions, not labels. This traditional-values adventure fiction set against the looming backdrop of a larger galactic conflict, Joe’s story is one of humility, friendship, and personal growth.
The girls are an important part of the team as he navigates the challenges of youth, his decisions on and off the field shape his future.
Homeworld Hero is your gateway into Hearts & Heroes from Homeworld and Beyond: a vast galaxy long ago, but not so far away.
Best of all, it’s based on a true story—sort of.

Great Performance, But Missing a Few Key Moments
AJ Carter delivers a strong performance in Homeworld Hero, bringing Joe Kaboom’s world to life with a natural, steady narration that fits the tone of the book. His delivery is passionate without being over-the-top, and his voices for different characters feel distinct without sounding forced. Most importantly, the turfball games crackle with energy—when he calls the plays, it feels like you’re right there in the stands, caught up in the tension and excitement.
The story itself is a great mix of sci-fi and sports drama, following Joe’s rise as a promising athlete with bigger dreams than just winning games. The narration really enhances the action-heavy moments, and Carter does an especially great job with Joe’s father, whose quiet, measured tone carries the weight of things left unsaid.
That said, I was a little disappointed that a few scenes from the book didn’t make it into the narration. Some of the quieter, more introspective moments that really deepen Joe’s character in print don’t land as strongly in the audiobook. It’s not a deal-breaker—what’s here is still excellent—but if you’ve read the book, you might notice some missing details that added extra emotional depth.
The pacing in audio is solid. Production quality is clean, and there are no weird background noises or awkward edits, so overall, it’s an easy, immersive listen.
Something different … a sci-fi sports story, this is absolutely worth your time. Just be aware that the audiobook streamlines some moments, so if you want the full experience, you might want to check out the print version too. Four stars, and I’ll still be grabbing the next one!
