About this listen
Hailed as the most compelling biography of the German dictator yet written, Ian Kershaw's Hitler brings us closer than ever before to the heart of its subject's immense darkness.
From his illegitimate birth in a small Austrian village to his fiery death in a bunker under the Reich chancellery in Berlin, Adolf Hitler left a murky trail, strewn with contradictory tales and overgrown with self-created myths. One truth prevails: the sheer scale of the evils that he unleashed on the world has made him a demonic figure without equal in the 20th century.
Ian Kershaw's Hitler brings us closer than ever before to the character of the bizarre misfit in his 30-year ascent from a Viennese shelter for the indigent to uncontested rule over the German nation that had tried and rejected democracy in the crippling aftermath of World War I. With extraordinary vividness, Kershaw recreates the settings that made Hitler's rise possible: the virulent anti-Semitism of prewar Vienna, the crucible of a war with immense casualties, the toxic nationalism that gripped Bavaria in the 1920s, the undermining of the Weimar Republic by extremists of the Right and the Left and the hysteria that accompanied Hitler's seizure of power in 1933 and then mounted in brutal attacks by his storm troopers on Jews and others condemned as enemies of the Aryan race.
In an account drawing on many previously untapped sources, Hitler metamorphoses from an obscure fantasist, a "drummer" sounding an insistent beat of hatred in Munich beer halls, to the instigator of an infamous failed putsch and, ultimately, to the leadership of a ragtag alliance of right-wing parties fused into a movement that enthralled the German people.

Good history badly read
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, I would recommend it. It is lucid, well written and entertaining.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Hitler?
Dying.
Would you be willing to try another one of Damian Lynch’s performances?
No. Very badly read. Wooden, strange inflection and dull.

Chilling, extremely informative and I’d imagine, without equal.
I wanted to try and understand how Hitler had managed to pull a cultured nation into his own twisted world and how his extreme beliefs were acted upon.
How severe economic decline in a once prosperous country lead to deep seated differences being whipped up to ensure that Hitler’s will was not only carried out but was done in such a way that the majority of Germans believed, it was for the good of their country and eventually the world.
It seems extraordinary that a “nobody” was the driving force that lead the world to go to war and that some stood by him and even believed victory could still be attained when Berlin’s population could hear distant artillery fire.
I cannot see this biography of Hitler being bettered.
An outstanding and epic piece of work.

Great insight into history
Excellent historical biography and allows a good degrees of insight into the world changing events of the 1940s from a different perspective than which we are traditionally taught. Note the book is quite heavy going at times so expect your credits to build up while you get through this important work.

Superb
A fantastic piece of work, superbly narrated.
A desperately sad endictment on human nature and how the hatred held by some can destroy so much. A frightening reminder that the road to perdition is, even now, never that far away. An essential listen.

THE Hitler book.
As a military historian, I say I haven't come across a more detailed and riveting account of this individual.

Mind knowingly good
How every minute of over 40 hours of narration can be so compelling is hard to express. An important subject for all to consider. Brilliantly written, read and realised.

A marathon, outstanding, listen.
The 45-hour running time is daunting, but between Kerahaw's incisive narrative and Lynch's tremendous oration it is well worth the effort.
In the introduction Kershaw almost laments having to write this book, which is a boiled-down version of his voluminous earlier biography of the Führer. Nevertheless, this is an excellent and consuming text that should hopefully open up the intrigue and horror of the Third Reich to a wider audience, in particular those ready to believe the rhetoric and promises of today's politicians and commentators.

So much detail.
There is so much detail that even if you are an avid reader and all round know it all on Hitler, the Third Reich and World War 2- if you haven't read this book yet - there is much in it that you can learn.

Hitler as never told before
An absolutely enthralling account of one of the most evil men in modern times and perhaps the history of civilisation. Excellently narrated and captivating throughout. For anyone with the remotest interest in World War Two history this is a must read.
