About this listen

You can take the detective out of the investigation, but you can't take the investigator out of the detective.

A notorious gang puts a bounty on Detective Cady Matthews's head after she takes down their leader, leaving her no choice but to hide until she can testify at trial. But her temporary home across the country on a remote North Carolina island isn't as peaceful as she initially thinks.

Living under the new identity of Cassidy Livingston, she struggles to keep her investigative skills tucked away, especially after a body washes ashore. When local police bungle the murder investigation, she can't resist stepping in.

But Cassidy is supposed to be keeping a low profile. One wrong move could lead to both her discovery and her demise. Can she bring justice to the island...or will the hidden currents surrounding her pull her under for good?

Hidden secrets

I enjoyed this book. Although it was very slow to start with and I was beginning to wonder if I had picked up a romance by mistake. Once all the character development and the reason for her being in hiding was out of the way the story did get more interesting, as she started to investigate. Cassidy is a complex character as she tries to hide behind a ditzy blonde persona, which doesn't come easy as she is a very bright and capable woman who can take care of herself. There is a lot going on in the story which obviously continues on into the series, I just hope it doesn't get too bogged down with the romance. Only one way to find and that is to start the next book.
When a police woman, single handily takes down a notorious drug gang and the members want revenge, she has no option but go into hiding and hope they don't find her before she can testify. She leaves with out packing anything or saying goodbye to friends and family and moves to Lantern beach, where she buys an ice cream truck to blend in and become a local. When a dead body washes up on the beach it is obvious the small town police don't know what they are doing. After meeting the accused husbands wife and family Cassidy know she can't let things unfold but will investigating blow her cover? Struggling not to show how good she is at her job Cassidy uses her temperamental ice cream truck to get close to the dead man's work colleagues. Can she find the motive for the murder? If her annoying neighbour doesn't get in the way, maybe.
I liked the narrator. She had a pleasant voice that she uses well.

When a Detective…

… goes into Witness Protection expect complications!
Not least as, to avoid idle hands, Cassidy is given an ice cream van to run; has to learn her new name and avoid investigating. Hard when a body washes ashore just down from her temporary home. No, not investigating. At all,,.
A nice sense of place and the characters behind the scenes of a tourist town at the very end of the Outer Banks.
Almost a cosy misters but just a shade too gritty.
