Summary
Soul mates across time. A sacrifice that could keep them apart forever.
In present day, near the village of Ornes, France, Devon works on his master's thesis in history as he fantasizes about meeting a WWI American Doughboy.
In 1917, during the Battle of Ornes, Stanley is a young soldier facing the horrors of the battlefield.
Mourning the death of his friends from enemy fire, Stanley volunteers to bring the message for retreat so he can save everyone else in his battalion. While on his mission, mustard gas surrounds Stanley, and though he thinks he is dying, he finds himself in a peaceful green meadow where he literally trips over Devon.
Devon doesn't believe Stanley is who he says he is, a soldier from WWI. But a powerful attraction grows between them, and if Stanley is truly a visitor from the past, then he is Devon's dream come true. The problem is, Stanley's soul wants to finish his mission, and time keeps yanking him back to relive his fateful last morning over and over, even as his heart and body long to stay with Devon.
Will Stanley have to choose between Devon and saving his battalion? Will time betray their love, leaving each alone?
A male/male time-travel romance, complete with hurt/comfort, French coffee, warm blankets, fireplace kisses, the angst of separation, and true love across time.

The sweetest time travel.
I loved loved loved this book. It It's something a bit different from usual. The time travel spin gives it a bit of a different pov. And thought the outcome may be predictable, it's just what it takes to make this story as sweet as it could be.
I wouldn't mind a follow up book, or even a novella, to catch up with how Stanley is doing in his today's life.
It's very emotional following Stanley's stumbling into the present and then being dragged back into the war multiple times and seeing the love grow between him and Devon.
Loved Greg Boudreaux's narration, he was simply perfect for this book.

Time travel epic love when soldier meets scholar
In Jackie North’s Love Across Time series, true love is stronger than the temporal sphere, and lovers who are destined to be together are displaced from their own time to be united with their soulmates. In HEROES FOR GHOSTS, Stanley, a young American ‘doughboy’ fighting on the battlefield in World War I France, is transported to the present-day to meet Devon, an American graduate student working on his dissertation on the effect of weather on battle outcomes. Almost obsessed with the idea of the American doughboy, it’s as if Devon has conjured his ideal to come directly from the past, to love him. This is a beautiful story, and I loved how Stanley and Devon’s relationship has a ‘fated mates’ element to it. Stanley’s inexperience and vulnerability are touching, and Devon’s tender care of him equally so; it’s impossible to avoid becoming invested in their love, and the compelling nature of Stanley’s dilemma results in moments of uncertainty that keep the reader on tenterhooks until the satisfying resolution that is a guarantee in a Jackie North story. The narration by Greg Boudreaux is nothing short of amazing, and amplifies the emotions evoked by the text. I loved it, completely!

LOVED IT!
This book is really different to may of the books in the genre and captured my interest from the first page to the last. The characters are beautifully drawn and the war time action is very poignant. Fantastical and fantastic.

Grab a tissue and settle in for a glorious story
This is a story of second chances, strong friendships, and love across time.
It's both uplifting and sad, because war is futile and the author did an excellent job of evoking the feel of WWI and the terror of the trenches over the promised guts and glory.
This is an emotional listen, in places heartbreaking, with low steam but with a tenderness that highlights the couples' connection.
As usual Greg does an excellent, thoughtful performance of the narration.

Incredible Story, Gorgeous Job by G. Boudreaux
What a beautiful and incredibly clever story! I can't believe I waited so long to read this one... though I'm glad I waited for the audiobook, because Greg Boudreaux does a marvelous job.
A gripping time travel story, and Jackie North weaves amazing details of the life of a World War I soldier throughout the novel. I toured those battle field memorials in the north of France when I was in grad school, and Ms. North really captures the aura of those grass covered trenches and fields of white crosses. Very, very moving and beautifully written.
It's a lovely romance as well, with compelling and very likeable characters. I know there's more books to this series and I've got my fingers crossed they'll all be coming out in audio - performed by the talented Greg Boudreaux.

Wow, such a great story.
STORY: Wow this was a great story! I read this when it was first release and I was happy to slip back into this world and the wonderful story. I found myself looking up some of the events that were mentioned.
**My original review from reading this book a while ago. I really enjoyed the relationship between Devon and Stanley. I was a bit hesitant about reading a time traveler book but this story was well written and exciting to follow.
I was a bit sad to see there wasn’t an epilogue as I have some follow up questions but am excited to see there is going to be more to these series.**
NARRATION: the narrator does an amazing job bringing this story to life. Each character was distinctive and the pace was great. I would listen to this again.

Heroes For Ghosts
I enjoyed this gentle slow burn, love story between Devon and Stanley.
The ‘groundhog day’ way Stanley has to relive his last day, trying to save his friends and the battalion, is nerve wracking and cleverly written.
Greg Boudreaux is superb in his narration.

Extraordinary!
I loved this audiobook, and I would give it more than 5 stars if I could! The characters of Devon and Stanley are from different times, but they are both so alone I couldn't help but want to see them end up together. The story was beautiful, poignant, and even a little suspenseful waiting to see what would happen and if Stanley would come back. The story was interesting and kept me listening all the way through in one sitting because I wanted to know what would happen next and how it would end. I will listen to this one again!
The narration by Greg Boudreaux was spectacular. His pacing was perfect and his voicing of the emotions and drama were fantastic. There were moments he almost had me in tears.
I received a free copy of this audiobook and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.
