Summary

Francis Joseph Cassavant is eighteen. He has just returned home from the Second World War, and he has no face. He does have a gun and a mission: to murder his childhood hero.

Francis lost most of his face when he fell on a grenade in France. He received the Silver Star for bravery, but was it really an act of heroism? Now, having survived, he is looking for a man he once admired and respected, a man adored by many people, a man who also received a Silver Star for bravery. A man who destroyed Francis's life.

Excellent performance by the narrator

A really good version of the book, which I recommend to my GCSE students. Good book, well told.

Heroes

I recommend this book to anyone who desires to read it but especially students who are studying the book. I chose 4 star on the story because I feel there were sections such as near the en I felt there could have been more of a interaction with Nicole and Francis. Overall I highly enjoyed and recommend.

Studying it for GCSE and this helped massively. Narration was clear. And the plot was easy to understand.

An honest and painful story of return from war

Never expect cheerful stories from Robert Cormier! A teenage boy returns to his hometown to deal with unfinished business. The events of the years before he enlisted as an underage soldier unfold as he revisits the places where he grew up and met his first love. Fantastic representation of facial disfigurement as Francis learns to live with what was left of his face after a grenade blast.
A well crafted story by one of the fathers of ya fiction.

ruined by the performance

I thought this would be a nice way of reading a book with a class of 14 year olds. Nope! They all ended up asking me to read it to them. Total waste of money and time.

I have never had a book give me to tensing, nervousness in my stomach till now!

After reading through half the book for my English GCSE's, I decided to finish it off just listening to its audiobook, I give this book a five out of five.

This book starts off great, forcing you to read on; making you constantly ask why. Francis' motivation becomes clear quite early on in the story, but the way Cormier makes you hate the antagonists, then makes you doubt that he's really a bad guy; does he really deserve what's coming? At the end of the story as Francis makes his way to LeSalle's flat, up the stairs and into his room... That's when you get the burning tenseness in your stomach; when you really want him to succeed, but's scared something will go awry... That is something I have never felt from a book.

.....

I think This book is great (like you haven't picked that up already), I'd recommend it to everyone who - can - read, as this is such an amazing book: short enough to read, and engaging enough to love.

Overall quite good

The narrator is somewhat bland, however one can distinctly tell characters apart. The story has suspense and surprise, easily making you empathetic for the characters.
