About this listen

When the young son of an Aryan Brotherhood of Texas gang captain goes missing, Ranger Darren Mathews has no choice but to investigate the crime.

Following the election of Donald Trump, a new wave of racial violence has swept the state. Dark, swampy and filled with skeletal trees, Caddo Lake is so large it crosses into Lousiana. This is deep country and the rule of law doesn't mean much to the Brotherhood, beyond what it can do for them.

A further complication is that Brotherhood is squatting on the land of a former Freedmen's community, and one of the last descendants of these former slaves is actually a suspect in the possible murder of the missing boy.

Instructed by his lieutenant to use the investigation to gather more evidence that might help to take down the Texas chapter of the Brotherhood, Darren is playing very dangerous game indeed.©2019 Attica Locke (P)2019 Hachette Audio UK

Another good story

This is the third or fourth novel that I have read by this author and she certainly tells a good tale. I continue to be appalled by the amount of racism that seems to exist throughout the USA, absolutely appalling. But the novel was well written, the plot absorbing and the narrator was excellent.

southern bayou atmosphere

Firstly EXCELLENT narration! Thoroughly enjoyed this book... Conjures up an atmospheric mindseye of the 'deep south' Texan bayou region.. but also a stark reminder of racism and generations of systemic racial attitudes conveyed through occasional, blatant language experienced during the course of Ranger Darren Matthews investigation.... (Will listen to the first in the Ranger Darren Matthews series ie (Bluebird Bluebird) which also has the same excellent narrator)

A little to slow for me

The story is good but either it's pace or the relatively monotone delivery made it hard to stay focused
