Summary
Groundbreaking for the time in which they were written, the vampire stories of the 1800s have inspired many modern writers. Enjoy the thrilling stories that originated the genre of vampire fiction. Includes: "The End of My Journey", by Lord Byron (1816); "The Vampyre", by John Polidori (1819); "The Family of the Vourdalak", by Aleksei Tolstoy (1839); "Varney the Vampire", by James Malcolm Rymer (1847); "Carmilla", by Sheridan Le Fanu (1872); "A True Story of a Vampire", by Eric, Count Stenbock (1894); and "Count Magnus", by M. R. James (1904).

Very good horror stories
Vivid descriptions - you'll enjoy these. Each story has its own horror and gives you a deadly vampire.

Great stories, narrator lacking
I love the stories, gothic horror is perfect now as the fall sets in. The narrator is good enough when reading "normally", but the accents leaves a lot to be desired. They all sound the same, which is none that can be recognised. Just a sort of generic not-English-accent.

Good stories, dry reading.
The stories included herein are of course all classics of the genre. I was actually surprised to find Lord Byron's notoriously unfinished "Fragment of a Novel" as the opening piece. Simon Vance has a great voice, very steady and clear, however I often find I can't listen to this work while doing other things. Vance's reading is very dry and his characterisation isn't very engaging. It's a bit like a text book and I had to rewind a few times.

Wonderful Journey through Vampire Literature
Stories are taken in chronological order from Byron to M R James. Great performance. A good grounding in early vampire literature. Thanks Audible for this free audio book.
The Radio 4 archive of ‘in our time’ has an episode on Polidori’s The Vampyre which references some of these other stories.
