About this listen

Arthur Conan Doyle was the greatest genre writer Britain has ever produced. Throughout a long writing career, he drew on his own medical background, his travels, and his increasing interest in spiritualism and the occult to produce a spectacular array of Gothic tales. Many of Doyle's writings are recognized as the very greatest tales of terror. They range from hauntings in the polar wasteland to evil surgeons and malevolent jungle landscapes.

This collection brings together over 30 of Conan Doyle's best Gothic tales. Darryl Jones's introduction discusses the contradictions in Conan Doyle's very public life - as a medical doctor who became obsessed with the spirit world, or a British imperialist drawn to support Irish Home Rule - and shows the ways in which these found articulation in that most anxious of all literary forms, the Gothic.

A Mixed Bag

A lot of stories, some more engaging than others. Good to have on in the background. The narrator is good on the whole, but there are too many horrible mispronunciations; sloppy and unprofessional.

wide range of imaginative tales

These stories are very much of their time and are a fascinating insight into the late Victorian mind. They range widely in topic and maintain your interest. I thought the narrator was excellent. He used a wide range of believable accents and voices to enhance the listener's engagement with the tales.

Conan Doyle on top form

Richly atmospheric tales from a true master storyteller. The essence of high Victorian gothic. Marvellous escapism for a dark winter’s night

Clever, twisty and difficult to put down

Great variety of stories and read brilliantly. They will make the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end. Really recommend!

Excellent collection

Very good editorial choices by Darryl Jones: some tales that are anthology staples, side by side with some lesser known pieces. Kudos, too, for including Jones's highly informative introduction! Gary Furlong's performance can at times be somewhat flat - especially as the stories demand that their reader is able to convey a sense of dread and moments of intense horror - but his accents and character acting are subtle and never overdone.

Good gothic tales

Very enjoyable gothic mysteries. The narration is good, but I do find it strange that almost every narrator on audible seems to have huge problems with the pronunciation of certain words - not the same words, but words that aren’t difficult to get right. Probably it’ll remain a bigger mystery than any of Conan Doyle’s….

Fantastic stories with wonderful narration

I really enjoyed this audiobook. Although it was 19hrs long the time seemed to fly by due mainly to finding myself lost in the wonderful tales told by a very talented narrator. Gary Furlong brought these stories to life. I will most certainly check out more of his narrations.
