Summary
Seizing his one chance to escape, Ethan Hosking leaves his violent ex-boyfriend, leaves his entire life, and walks into the path of a raging bushfire. Desperate to start over, a new man named Aubrey Hobbs walks out of the fire-ravaged forest, alive and alone. With no ID and no money, nothing but his grandfather's telescope, he goes where the Southern Cross leads him.
Patrick Carney is the resident lighthouse keeper in Hadley Cove, a small town on the remote Kangaroo Island off the coast of South Australia. After the tragic death of his lover four years ago, he lives a solitary life; just him, a tabby cat, the Indian and Southern Oceans, and a whole lot of loneliness. He's content with his life until a stranger shows up in town and turns Patrick's head.
Patrick never expected to be interested in anyone else.
Aubrey never expected to be happy.
Between Aubrey's love of the stars and Patrick's love of the ocean, these two fragile hearts must navigate new waters. If they can weather the storm of their pasts, they could very well have a love that eclipses everything.
Contains mature themes.

I think the author needs a birds and the bees talk
Absolutely loved the story, it's very sweet.
Just so readers are aware: the author appears to think that the characters are only at risk of an STI if they use the back door but use of a rubber doesn't get discussed otherwise when they get jiggy or have 'the talk'...
Which is a FUNDAMENTAL MISUNDERSTANDING OF STI SAFETY
Don't take this advice ffs, use a rubber all the time unless you get tested 🙄
This isn't the first book of Walker's I've read with this issue, like all the 🍆💋 didn't already put them at risk of STDs...
If you're going to write lgbt bedroom scenes at least understand the basic principles.
Hell straight people need to know this too!
A Google search would fix this plot hole in 2 minutes and it's really painfully awkward to read.

Very good book
I really enjoyed the book. The story was interesting and the narration was good. I am usually not a Joel Leslie fan but he was very good as the narrator. I think his narration is better when the story has an English or Australian setting. Overall, the book was really good.

An emotionally touching and fulfilling book
This is one of N. R. Walker's best books. It's a captivating narrative of courage, perseverance and love. It goes beyond basic plotline and delicately tug at the readers' heartstrings at the emotional level avoiding manipulation and rather take them on a beautiful journey of loss, bravery and mending of hearts and spirits. Both Aubrey and Patrick exhibit great depth.
I love how at his lowest Aubrey/Ethan refuses to surrender and summons the bravery to face life head-on and literally (yes I mean literally and not metaphorically) walks through the fire to be reborn. He keeps fighting and his unwavering resilience is rewarded in the form of true love from an amazing man. I absolutely love the dynamic between Aubrey and Patrick and how their relationship evolves until they complete each other perfectly. They both learn that even after facing profound adversity they are capable of love and deserve to be happy.
Joel Leslie's performance, as always, is exceptional, ensuring that every emotion intended by the author, characters, and the storyline is felt deeply by the audience.

Loved it!
A sweet Australian M/M romance, that tells the story of two young men, who're hurting, finding and helping each other.
It also puts a spotlight on an important and rarely discussed real life problem, that being domestic abuse in m/m relationships, which unfortunately are largely ignored.

Moving tale
I loved this book when I read it and thought the narrator did a solid job of bringing the characters to life. The story isn't always easy, but I was completely engrossed.

A beautifully moving story of two guys fate brought together
I will trigger warning domestic violence. But that’s the reason why one of the characters gave up his old life and set off on a new one to find love on a modest little island and make a sweet couple.

Emotional rollercoaster…
This book is absolutely beautiful. I can’t remember ever crying over a book before but when it came to this story I just couldn’t help myself. Aubrey’s story especially hurt my heart, especially in the first few chapters when he seemed so vulnerable and in need of love. I loved how caring Patrick was towards Aubrey from the very beginning and their journey to lovers was stunning. I also loved the found family feel that resonated with the town, the town characters were likeable for the most part and the whole book felt like a warm hug. I was sad as soon as I finished and I would recommend this book to anyone..
