Summary

Sagara Sousuke isn't your typical high school student.

He reads military enthusiast magazines; he responds to questions with "affirmative;" he brings grenades to school in his bag. Though everyone at school takes him for a hopeless military geek, Chidori Kaname thinks there might be something more to him. When their plane is hijacked in the middle of a field trip, Kaname's instincts will prove correct: Sousuke is an elite, mech-piloting mercenary... and he's here to protect her!

Good return to a old franchise.

Great performance with the animes english dub surprisingly making a return and matching their original voices well. FMP novels was released years (decades even?) and its nice seeing them return. Its nice getting to experience the full novels too.
Sosuke returns with his old antics, struggling to fit into normal life offering fun humour as the story gets more serious, focusing on a hijacking of a plane as students head on a trip. Its a great intro to the series and we'll detailed, if you have seen the TV series (even long ago) it helps brings the AS and other concepts to life even more. Really well done to the voice actors too, they do a great job acting.

Nostalgia

It's really enjoyable listening to the cast reprise their roles from the English Dub of the anime. Recommended for those who know the story and want to visit the characters again

Fantastic

Great story. Voice actors are fantastic; it’s very much like listening to the anime, but with added depth.

Mixed Feelings, verging on very positive.

As a diehard mecha fan, I had to buy this, and I definitely don't regret my decision, however my feelings are a bit mixed:

On the positive side, the translation is faithful while still being written in good English, I particularly appreciated the use of honorifics since the story heavily involves Japanese people.
The slice of life parts are also acted with a good tone and appropriate effort.
I also think that using a male and female side by side helps immersion in the dialogues between the characters.

On the negative side, the action scenes are a bit underacted; the lack of screaming and agitation undermines the gravity of the situations.
And, as ironic as it sounds, Sousuke's performance feels a a bit lacking, while all the other male characters are really excellent.
Thought this opinion might be influenced by the original va, Tomokazu Seki, being iconic in my mind.

Still, I consider this a very good product and an excellent way to experience the story of Full Metal Panic, short of course of reading it in the original language.

I will keep following the series with good expectations, and I'll hope the publisher will bring other mecha light novels, like Knights and Magic or the many Gundam novels.
