Summary

FROM THE SUNDAY TIMES BEST SELLING AUTHOR OF HOW TO FAIL

As a society, there is a tendency to elevate romantic love. But what about friendships? Aren't they just as – if not more – important? So why is it hard to find the right words to express what these uniquely complex bonds mean to us? In Friendaholic: Confessions of a Friendship Addict, Elizabeth Day embarks on a journey to answer these questions.

Growing up, Elizabeth wanted to make everyone like her. Lacking friends at school, she grew up to believe that quantity equalled quality. Having lots of friends meant you were loved, popular and safe. She was determined to become a Good Friend. And, in many ways, she did. But in adulthood she slowly realised that it was often to the detriment of her own boundaries and mental health.

Then, when a global pandemic hit in 2020, she was one of many who were forced to reassess what friendship really meant to them – with the crisis came a dawning realisation: her truest friends were not always the ones she had been spending most time with. Why was this? Could she rebalance it? Was there such thing as…too many friends? And was she really the friend she thought she was?

Friendaholic unpacks the significance and evolution of friendship. From exploring her own personal friendships and the distinct importance of each of them in her life, to the unique and powerful insights of others across the globe, Elizabeth asks why there isn’t yet a language that can express its crucial influence on our world.

From ghosting and frenemies to social media and seismic life events, Elizabeth leaves no stone unturned. Friendaholic is the book you buy for the people you love but it's also the book you listen to, to become a better friend to yourself.

Critic reviews

"This book is brilliant." (Jo Elvin)

"I’ve never read a book about friendships before. This one really digs deep, is bravely revealing and makes me reflect on my own friendship habits, issues, and culture." (Bernardine Evaristo)

"I really want to say that reading Elizabeth Day feels like listening to a friend, but it's complicated by the fact that I’m an actual friend who makes an appearance in this book on friendship. But fuck it, it's true: reading Elizabeth Day feels like listening to a friend. And reading her on this strangely neglected theme is a revelation. Friendships can mean as much, sometimes even more than family, and finally we have a book that treats the subject with the seriousness it deserves. And Day is the best possible guide: funny, moving, helpful and true, Friendaholic deserves a massive audience." (Sathnam Sanghera)

Utterly Brilliant

I could not stop listening to this book. I have come away with pages and pages of golden nuggets and reflections. A truly brilliant book. It was heartfelt, genuine, real and raw. Thank you Elizabeth for writing this book, it was an eye opener and gave me so much food for thought. This is one book I know I will revisit over and over again.

Enjoyable, some parts I skipped!

Enjoyable listen for the most part! The history of friendship and validation that having more friends is better than not was v interesting. The Clemmy section: most of that chapter was not relevant imo and dragged on a bit. Generally a bit twee for my taste.

a great listen, very insightful

I really enjoyed listening to this on my long drives to pick my daughter up for weekend stays. I found a lot of it quite poignant and especially liked the part about 'friendship diversity' and accepting that not all friendships will be identical, not every one will be close, and we should try to enjoy them for what they are rather than what they are not.

Original, insightful, fascinating

An articulate and interesting deep dive into the various types of friendships we can encounter/enjoy in our lives - great to have it all captured so beautifully and a real thought provoking read. As someone in their mid 40s, looking back over past and current friendships as I listened to this, I found myself nodding and smiling and generally feeling very seen. A great listen.

Beautiful, real and honest

The order that this book is written in is perfect. It takes you on a journey through friendships of another person, whilst at the same time takes you on a journey through your own friendships. It is comforting, well written and beautifully read by Elizabeth. I’d like to say thank you to her x

Very original - loved it!

I found this book to thought-provoking and relatable. It made me self-reflect and question some current friendships and especially my attitude to new friendships. I really wanted to discuss every chapter with my closest friends… might have to re-listen and take notes!

Best Book on Friendships

This is one of the best books I've read/listened to so far on friendships. I found myself nodding in agreement, at times laughing or on the brink of tears. Even though I don't consider myself a friendaholic, I could relate a lot to some of the topics explored in the book. Highly recommended!

Relatable with some nice takeaways

It was nice hearing my scattered thoughts about friendship presented so well in a book. Some parts will stay with forever.
