Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
Vernon Alverstoke sees no reason to put himself out for anyone.
But when a distant connection asks for help, he is quickly plunged into one drama after another by the disorderly Merriville family.
Surprisingly, he finds himself far from bored - especially when he encounters their strong-minded daughter, Frederica.
However, she seems far more concerned with her family's welfare than his romantic advances....
Critic reviews
"Absolutely delicious tales of Regency heroes.... Utter, immersive escapism." (Sophie Kinsella)
"I could mainline Heyer's Regency romances until the end of time and still not get bored.... Georgette Heyer is perfect lockdown escapism." (India Knight)
"One of my perennial comfort authors. Heyer's books are as incisively witty and quietly subversive as any of Jane Austen's." (Joanne Harris)

One of her best
Stuffy marquis is won over by practical Miss and her large & family unruly family. It’s the humour and character painting that shines in this book, and Joe Jameson brings the world and the characters right off the page & into your head. Just a delight.

Great story pretty good narration
This narrator does a good job at the voices and consistency, his only problem is a slight tendency to mispronounce words, some uniquely period words (on-dits), some things like ‘kindling’. This is pretty standard for the new Penguin remakes however, so I don’t regard it much.

A decent narration of a favourite book
Frederica is one of my favourite Heyers. I own the old audio version but I feel the narrator's performance of the main male character makes him sound positively ancient! This new one fares better with a narrator who, despite the mis-pronunciations that seem to blight these new versions, gives an overall performance which balances them out. It's an easy listen and thoroughly enjoyable. Sadly, overall I have been very disappointed by the new Heyer recordings and have found many of them far inferior to the earlier versions. Thankfully I purchased all the ones I wanted before they were removed from Audible.

Enjoyable story
I have the original audible version of Frederica and thoroughly agree with a previous reviewer that the narrator on that recording made the main male character sound at least 50 instead of being in his 30’s. This completely put me off the book. This version is much better not only because the narrator ensures the voices are better matched to the age of the characters but he brings out the humour of the story which was missing before. Apart from one passage he seemed to mix up the characters’ voices which was confusing - where were the editors - I thoroughly enjoyed this version.

Wonderful on every level!
The excellent narration really brought out the individual characters in this sparkling story and missed none of the humour of the book.
One of her best, it had me laughing out loud on a number of occasions!
It was easy to forgive the one or two mispronunciations.

Absolute joy full of wit and humour
This is one of my favourite Georgette Heyer books being so full of wit and humour. The story of Lord Alverstoke and his dealings with the Merriville family - the elder sister Frederica, the beautiful ninny Charis, the young science mad Felix, the youthful Jessemy and the head of the family Harry - had me in whoops of delight.
I thoroughly enjoyed the narration by Joe Jameson as each character was distinct and easily recognisable making it extremely easy to follow.
