About this listen
'Gripping, urgent, superbly reported and brilliantly written' - DAN JONES
'A gripping and pacey book that reads like a thriller. I found it shocking in a world where I didn't think I could be shocked any more. Henry Hemming wears his extensive research very lightly and manages to shape a great narrative from a complex and dark episode from our recent history. An important and skilfully crafted book.' JOHN O'FARRELL
HOW THE DEATH OF A SPY IN THE IRA LED TO ONE OF THE BIGGEST MURDER INVESTIGATIONS IN BRITISH HISTORY.
On 26th May 1986, the body of an undercover British agent was found by the side of a muddy lane, with a rope
tied around its wrists and tape over each eye. Years later, it was reported that this murder might have been carried out by another undercover British agent, known as 'Stakeknife'. In 2016, a detective began to investigate this case, and would soon find himself running the largest murder investigation in British history.
In a compulsive blend of investigative journalism and true crime thriller, Henry Hemming exposes the parallel worlds of the IRA and British intelligence through the lives of those inextricably bound up in both. He reveals the bravery of those who were crucial in ending the Troubles in Northern Ireland, the bloodiest and longest-running conflict in recent British history, and the determination of one detective in his dogged search for justice and the truth.

'The best book about the Troubles since Patrick Radden Keefe's Say Nothing . . . outstanding reporting and an unflinching focus on the facts at hand' - Wall Street Journal©2024 Henry Hemming (P)2024 Quercus Editions Limited

Excellent overview of the troubles
I like others probably delved into this book to get more info about stake knife. I probably walked away with little I previously knew. However what I did get was a better understanding of the complex history of, the evolution and some of the in-depth details of the whole situation and its participants. I thought it was excellently written with an unbiased view. I’ll be looking out for the authors other books. Well worth a read or listen.

One of the best
Without doubt one of the best audible books I have listened to. Hailing from Belfast and living during the Troubles there was so much mystifying about it at the time. This book fitted together all the pieces of the jigsaw I had collected in my mind into one coherent, believable and ugly picture. Wonderfully researched, written and balanced, Mr Hemmings has done a lasting service to the legion of books written since the end of the Troubles, some of which have attempted to rewrite the history and central characters to airbrush the past. For that, as a citizen of Northern Ireland, I heartily thank him!! This was the first time I have come across the narrator and he complimented the book perfectly ( I confess I find it impossible to listen to Belfast accented authors who tend to read these books, so that was a good call in my view.
Anyone not from NI will appreciate this book as a spy book of the first rank.

Very informative
I’ve not read a lot about the troubles so found this book really interesting. Reads like a thriller at times, makes me want to read more on this subject.

AN EXCELLENT BOOK!!
What an incredible story. When the troubles started in Northern Ireland, I lived in Cheshire & was in my early 20's. I can remember all the incidents referred to in the book happening but, certainly not all the spying that was going on!!! I just couldn't wait to get to the next chapter to find out what would happen next.

Fantastic insight
A very compelling listen to help understand how the IRA were infiltrated to the very top, the complexities of how running agents can at time appear contradictory to what you signed up for.
