About this listen

"A superbly crafted, engagingly entertaining, and memorable work of historical romance." (Midwest Book Review)

Given the chance to free her from a loveless marriage, will his honor be stronger than his love?

Only after his regiment is recalled to the Continent to fight the horrific battle of Waterloo does Captain Geoffrey Mantell at last see the truth: that Miss Emily Chandry, the unfortunate daughter of the miser next door, is more than his childhood playfellow. He comes back to England after the war to claim her hand, but he is too late—Emily is lost to him, the wife of a stranger who does not seem to care for more than her social connections.

Reeling from this turn of events, Geoffrey must try to move on. But Emily's situation will continue to haunt him until a mystery surrounding her late father opens up opportunities to change her fate, and he can only hope that his love for her will not drive him to go too far.

Book 3

Not a bad story, but too long winded for my liking. I much preferred book 1 and couldn’t finish book 2…

So this wasn’t too bad but perhaps just a little girly for me. I must try to find a Mrs Radcliffe novel. It might explain things.

Moving and beautifully written

The characters are well developed and the plot is engrossing. One feels the disappointment of the hero and the pain of his struggles to overcome unrequited love. And yet, it's not a book of angst and gnashing of teeth. A most enjoyable experience all round.

Lovely

A delightful story of quiet, enduring love that eventually is realised. Not a dramatic storyline, but likeable characters and, as with the previous books in the series, beautifully written. No grating language or anachronisms to spoil one’s immersion into Regency times. I very much look forward to the next in the series and wonder who will be the central character. Clara deserves an adventure, I think.
