Summary
From the preface:
"As I mounted the m249 machine gun against my shoulder, I felt the weight of the entire weapon. I had never really had the opportunity to fire one of these bad boys before, but by god, there was a first for everything. I flipped the safety selector switch, removing the weapon from safe. I closed my eyes for a brief moment, knowing time was of the essence. I reopened them, steadied my breathing as I squeezed softly on the trigger. I fired small round bursts into the crowd of these things. I barely knew how to work one of these because my military career thus far has been magazine-fed weapons. I prayed to whoever was listening for the belt to remain free with no snag. I continued to three to five-round burst my way to the base exchange. The good news: these things were going down with regular ammo. The bad news: I don’t know if I have enough ammo for all of them."
Imagine waking up to your entire world being FUBAR....
Iraq, 2010. Army Specialist Jason Chantry was at his wit's end with a complacent, dull deployment. That all changed for him on a fateful night. Blood, bodies, and destruction as far as the eye could see. Chantry and his fellow squad members were admin, not door-kicking infantrymen! Together, they'll scream, shoot, and, did we mention scream? They'll get their way to wherever they can figure is safe by any means necessary.
Part one of an epic four-book series, Blackout is only the start of what's to come.
As a former soldier in the United States Army, Harry always found discrepancies with non-military or non-law enforcement writers trying to write their assessment on what it feels like to be in the middle of turmoil. Harry worked hard to ensure accuracy with every aspect of the military, only having to worry about injecting monsters into the story. Every detail was considered. The camaraderie. The smell of the country. The feel of the recoil of a weapon. The taste of fear.

"We have to get out of here."
A short, but very atmospheric, tale of a not so routine day in the life of four soldiers in Iraq. Something felt wrong to Jason Gantry, a runner, and it was. Part battle scene, part horror tale, and even a bit like a video game, he and his companions try to survive in the heat and the sand against a most unexpected attack. Witty, lots of profanity, the author places the reader right there in the forefront of the fighting: quite brilliant.
The narration, a first person telling of the story from Jason's point of view, is fast paced, echoing the emotions and horror felt by the character. Michael Renack gives believable voicing to all of the protagonists but especially captures that of the storyteller, adding to the depth of character already written. A fine performance.
My thanks to the rights holder of FUBAR, who at my request, freely gifted me with a complimentary copy via Audiobook Boom. It was a very pleasant surprise and hope that author Harry Carpenter will be adding a second one book to follow this one. If he does, I will most definitely want to read it. Highly recommended (provided no offence is easily taken by character use of swearing under duress

enjoyable story, I need tge next book
I fancied a different type of book to my usual. so picked this as a shorter book. initially the narrator really wasn't for me, the voices, especially the woman character was a little annoying but I turned down the speed and it helped .
wasn't sure what to expect rom the book, but got into it really quickly, i would describe it as a film you would get watch at 3am on the syfi channel, but dont get my wrong that is not a bad thing I was really drawn in. there is a clear story, some good characters and monsters.
As my usual reads are Grimdark this was a little tame on the gore but a nice change for me. its an easy listen, finished in two days commuting to work and I would like to read the next book just to see what, where, why and how (no spoilers).
if you fancy a food book with a decent plot and can live with the narration then give this a go.
