About this listen

There are two sides to every story.

But only one is the truth.

A young woman turns up at a police station. She has been kept prisoner in her own home. Abused and tortured, her every move watched, her every thought controlled. Now she's finally escaped.

That's what she says.

But when the police arrive at the address she's given them, her story doesn't seem to add up. Her husband is missing, but his phone and wallet are still in the house.

She says she's the victim, but what if she's not? What if the stories she's telling aren't her stories at all....

Grabs you by the neck... and doesn’t let go!

A phenomenal listen! Amazing book, with lots of twists and turns and suspense. Narration was the best I have ever heard, and I listen to a lot of audio books. Download this right now... you won’t be disappointed. My favourite listen this year. Off to find more books written by Deborah Bee or narrated by Emma Gregory. A five star read, across the board.

Riveting!

Emma Gregory's narration made this a riveting listen. She mastered all the different characters so wonderfully and made them very real. Amazing that she can do so many voices. Many audio books are spoiled by the reader but this one was made by her. It's a nasty subject, but there are some very funny and heart warming bits when the women in the hostel are chatting together that made me laugh out loud. I will look for another book by the same author and definitely the same narrator!

Gripping

Couldn't put this down, gripping story and the narrator is incredible. The accents of the many characters are spot on. Best narrator I have come across.

A Dramatic Story

This is the second book that I have listened too by Emma Gregory and she is amazingly talented and makes it sound as though there are a cast of people rather than one person telling this story.

The story was definitely intriguing and kept me engaged all of the way through.

My only criticism was around the police investigation. It was hard to believe that a DS from a community team would be in charge of co-ordinating a drug programme whilst investigating D.V and murder. I couldn't understand why they didn't just check for a marriage certificate to see if they were really married. I also found the DS quite an annoying and aggressive character and cringed during her interview with Claire. The book was possibly slightly longer than it needed to be but overall I really enjoyed this.

Glad I stuck with it.

First and foremost, I think this book should have come with a trigger warning.

However, against my inner self screaming at me to return the book, I stuck with it. The characterisation was too compelling not to. I cared too much too soon.

Having been in this situation, to some extent, I was pleased with the accuracy of the treatment the main Character, Clare, was shown by the police. The agencies we have in place to help and how they can differ.

I was also pleased the Hero was so unexpected.

FURTHERMORE, the narration was the best I've ever heard. The way Emma never forgotten who she was playing, the use of as many accents as possible, made it easy to form images of the characters.

All in all, even though the subject matter was hard going, a very well written and performed book.

Speechless

Ok. First things first - the narrator! Oh my god. She is so damn skilled at making different voices and accents. I am honestly lost for words how good she is. Was a pleasure to listen to her!

Second of all - the story is really really disturbing. The domestic violance is described in such details that it was incredibly hard to listen and I had to take breaks and listen to more uplifting things. The story is so well written. I even had a bloody dream that my partner was abusing me. This is how much this book got to me. I am so happy i chose to read to this book. The characters were believable, the plot was believable.

All in all one of the more disturbing books I have read, but so damn good.

Excellent narration

Really enjoyed this book - both the storyline and the characters in it. Well written plot which has the reader swaying from side to side about who is telling the truth.
The narrator was excellent. She did a great job not only pulling off the different accents, but also male and female characters. I was amazed there was only one person narrating this book - switching from character to character was seamless and greatly increased the enjoyment of this story.

Once you start this prepare to listen through to the end in one session! It's a really good psychological thriller. The reader really brings it to life.
