Summary

A balm for our times from the internationally bestselling author of Wintering.

Our sense of enchantment is not only sparked by grand things. The awe-inspiring, the numinous, is all around us, all the time. It is transformed by our deliberate attention. The magic is of our own conjuring.

Feeling bone-tired, anxious and overwhelmed by the rolling news cycle and the pandemic age, Katherine May seeks to unravel the threads of a life wound too tightly. Could there be another way to live - one that feels more meaningful, more grounded in the places beneath our feet? One that would allow us to feel more connected, more rested and at ease, even as seismic changes unfold on the planet?

Craving a different path, May explores the restorative properties of the natural world and begins to rekindle her sense of wonder. It is a journey that takes her from sacred wells to wild moors, from cradling seas to starfalls. Through deliberate attention and ritual, she finds nourishment and a more hopeful relationship to the world around her.

Enchantment is an invitation to each of us to experience life in all its sensual complexity and to find the beauty waiting for us there.

Enjoyable and relatable

The first half of the book was thoroughly as described above. The second seemed like a repeat and not sure what was gained from it. All still nice to listen to as I’m working - not sure I’d want to read it though. Overall a concept many feel and isn’t addressed, Katherine does a wonderful job vocalising these feelings that look inside most of us, and has brought me closer to myself. So thank you for that Katherine.

hoped for something much more practical and positive

I wish this had been read by the author. In May's podcast her voice has a warmth and a lightness which elevates difficult and tender subjects. While this was beautifully read it felt serious and very negative at times. It could be the prose but it could be the intonation?

I nearly didn't continue after the first 1-2 hours as it felt like a very personal and pessimistic memoir, I couldn't relate to much and it felt depressing or frustrating to listen to.
I loved the sections where research and other writers were referenced. I'm glad I continued to the end and May gives some lovely examples but overall I had hoped for something much more practical and positive. I felt this lacked substance.
May mentions in the acknowledgements how hard she found this to write and thanks someone for advising a big change from the book she first intended. She speaks of lots of starts and stops and drafts. I can't help but feel sad that this comes through in the final work. I wonder what the book she intended could have been like, this one felt somehow compromised.

A beautiful book about finding the everyday magical in a sometimes tiring world.

I have adored all of Katharine May's books - she writes beautifully and in a way that is down to earth and wonderfully human. This book was exactly what I needed right now. Feeling burnt out and struggling with health issues - I needed reminding that enchantment is there, if only I am willing to look for it.

Brilliant

I loved this book best of all. Wise, real and of our time. Although this is a book of personal experiences it feels as though these are my experiences voiced with clarity and insight. Thank you.

Her work always feels like home

Wintering is one of the few books I listen to every year and this one may soon fall into the same category

Amazing read

I love this book. It took me on a magical journey, from the way it found me, through to the timing of each chapter it was full of synchronicity like I meant to listen to these words at this very moment. I am enchanted, relieved and inspired. Thank you.
