Summary
The king is dead. Long live the king.
The Mage-King of Wessex has passed away, and the stage is set for a battle royal: the richest mage in England versus the most powerful coven of witches. And Conrad finds himself in the middle.
The struggle is a civilized one at first - Lord Mowbray and the Daughters of the Goddess meet for a conference in Mowbray’s Mage Palace of Pellacombe, with Conrad, Mina, and Saffron sent to see fair play. Until first tragedy and then murder plunge the staff kingdom of Wessex into a dangerous crisis, and Conrad has to draw on all his team’s powers and his own experience to avoid a bloodbath.
The sixth installment of Mark Hayden’s The King’s Watch is a deep study of power at the sharp end, where families and clans are stretched beyond breaking point in the brutal world of magick.

A little confusing but still enjoyable
I liked the book on the whole, the characters remain engaging and the world interesting.
That said the shifting POV towards the later sections is a touch clunky, and I do think characters relaying info to Conrad would be better in the whole.
The conclusion feels a little unsatisfactory, not so much in what it’s setting up which seems fine, but in the fates of certain characters.
The weakest of the books so far, but still sufficient to keep me listening out for the next.

Excellent voice work on a great book
I adore the King's Watch series and was looking forward to this one coming out on Audible so that I could listen to the book after reading it a couple of times previously.
Ciaran does an excellent job of brining all the characters to life with their own distinct voices. Quite how he manages to slip from one to another when narrating a conversation is a mystery to me!

Another great instalment
These books are great and I am really enjoying them. the list of characters at the start was very useful. The violence when it happens is pretty shocking but fits the story. I have to say I am not that interested in cricket!!

Things get complicated
I am taking a break from this series after this book, I really enjoy them but this particular book was a real chore to get through if I am honest, There are simply too many characters with too many agendas, which I guess is the point of the story. However, I found I lost track of who was who, who was on which side and what the actual point of the mission was. Also didn’t actually care about any of them!
The main character’s fawning relationship with Mina is tiresome, you would think he was a 15 year old boy and she is becoming one of those irritating characters who I honestly hope gets killed off!

I loved the first five books but..
I've forced myself to listen to over 6 hours of this as I enjoyed the first five books, I'm still waiting for something of note to happen. There is a massive cast of characters, keeping track of who was who and how they related to each other began to feel like research for a history assignment. We have swapped Vicky and Hannah for Saffron (insipid rich girl) and Mina (ugh!) and magical adventures for political conferences - dull, dull, dull. Maybe something would have happened if I continued listening but I found I no longer cared

Another great narration performance
The narrator delivers another excellent performance and it's still mainly a solid plot.... however, I've been struggling to continue with these last couple of books, as the character of Mina is just so jarring and distracts from the storyline. It wouldn't be an issue if she was an antagonist character, but her awful personality is not believable as one that would be embraced into close friendships with the others in the close knit group. It seems doubtful that Conrad would be so besotted with such a self obsessed diva, but we've all had a friend with an awful partner that no-one can fathom. But that person is tolerated when they can't be avoided?
