Summary

Penguin presents the unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of Eeny Meeny, the rocket-paced serial-killer thriller debut from M. J. Arlidge. Read by Elizabeth Bower, Nigel Pilkington, Lucy Gaskell and Annie Aldington.

The girl emerged from the woods, barely alive. Her story was beyond belief. But it was true. Every dreadful word of it. Days later, another desperate escapee is found - and a pattern is emerging. Pairs of victims are being abducted, imprisoned then faced with a terrible choice: Kill or be killed. Would you rather lose your life or lose your mind?

Detective Inspector Helen Grace has faced down her own demons on her rise to the top. As she leads the investigation to hunt down this unseen monster, she learns that it may be the survivors - living calling cards - who hold the key to the case. And unless she succeeds, more innocents will die...

Introducing M. J. Arlidge's Detective Inspector Helen Grace.

Eeny Meeny is an electrifying debut, with the nerve-shredding intensity of Saw and Along Came a Spider. Fans of James Patterson and Mo Hayder should pay attention. M. J. Arlidge has worked in television for the last fifteen years, specialising in high end drama production. In the last five years Arlidge has produced a number of prime-time crime serials for ITV, including Torn, The Little House and most recently Undeniable, broadcast in spring 2014. Currently writing for Silent Witness, Arlidge is also piloting original crime series for both UK and US networks. Debut thriller Eeny Meeny, which introduces Detective Inspector Helen Grace, has sold to publishers around the world. The follow up, Pop Goes the Weasel, will be published by Penguin Books in September 2014.

Eeny Meeny

This was a brilliant story so gruesome too, it was very much like the saw with a choice of live or die situation, You really feel it for these poor characters that are chosen, drugged, and left in a fight for survival, do you starve or do you kill the other person that means so much to you to live? Be warned its very detailed in places not for the squeamish.
Highly recommend this book.

Gruesome murders in Southhampton

Good story, well read with some unexpected twists and turns. Keeps you guessing until the end.
Not quite Sherlock Holmes, but Helen Grace is a likeable character. Leaves some in answered questions, but that's what your imagination is for!

Worth a Listen

I enjoyed listening to the book, it's a psychological thriller in that it makes you wonder what you'd do if you were placed in the same situation as some of the victims. The story was interesting and you got a range of different perspectives as the plot moves along. I didn't really warm to the main character and thought it a bit bizarre that as a police woman she rides around on a motorbike and pays to get whipped and beaten regularly. It would be good to find out how this character develops after the first book. I'd listen to more if a series is to develop, definitely give it a go.

tense and enjoyable

What made the experience of listening to Eeny Meeny the most enjoyable?

It kept me guessing right to the end

What was one of the most memorable moments of Eeny Meeny?

Some memorably gruesome moments.

What does the narrators bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Slightly disconcerting at first with the multiple narrators, but once I got used to that, I thought they were of a high standard.

The clue's in the title

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

An interesting take on a serial killer that has you wondering if you would be the one to pull the trigger. Author exploits the way people can be driven to almost anything in extremist. Would definitely listen to more by this author.

Enjoyable

Good story, reasonably well-written, I think I might have enjoyed it more if I wasn't comparing it to some other really amazing audiobooks I've had from here. It's a good, solid thriller and mystery and the performance is very good. I didn't warm to any of the characters particularly but that didn't detract too much from the overall experience. I wouldn't recommend it to anybody squeamish but otherwise I enjoyed it.

Disappointed

I found I didn’t like the main character, and all the way through I was waiting for other narrators to take part, as there was supposed to be three women, and a man narrating. This detracted and distracted me.

A cracking story

An excellent story that grips you from the beginning. What makes a good story great is the narrators they were , well, fantastic. If there is a follow up keep the team together. I

Great writing, one unbelieveable plot aspect

This was, as others have said, a new take on a police procedural, and I was pretty hooked. I was though disappointed at what seemed to me a major, unbelievable glitch in the history of the killer. No spoilers (I hate it when people do that!) so I'd say it's worth a listen and I'd be willing to try another by this author.
